PITTSBURGH – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team opened the season on a high note with several strong performances at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.

Members of the Slippery Rock women's team combined to win seven of nine singles matches and go 6-3 in doubles play in their first collegiate contests of the year.

The Rock's singles entries were highlighted by Georgie Lancaster and Tina Slovak, both of whom went a perfect 2-0 in an event that included athletes from SRU, host Carnegie Mellon University and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division rival Mercyhurst University.

Lancaster earned her perfect record with wins over CMU's Anika Joshi (8-7 (7-2)) and Mercyhurst's Roisin Murphy (8-2) while Slovak downed Simran Bedi of Carnegie Mellon (8-3) and MU's Valentine Budin (8-2).

Veterans Gabriela del Val del Toro and Nuria Martin Lopez both won their lone singles matches of the invitational with respective wins over CMU's Divya Venkatarama (8-4) and Joshi (8-3) as did rookie Nicole Kempton, who registered her first collegiate win with an 8-2 triumph over Ainika Hou of Carnegie Mellon.

Slippery Rock's doubles entries were led by the pairing of Dari Sakhanova, the 2023 PSAC West Freshman of the Year, and Amaia Balaguer Brau, a sophomore transfer who compiled a combined record (singles + doubles) of 27-6 a season ago at St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Sakhanova and Balaguer Brau earned matching 6-3 wins over Venkatarama / Anna Chow (CMU), Bedi / Hou (CMU) and Murphy / Kayla Dean (MU).

Lancaster and Slovak continued their near perfect weekend's with a 6-4 doubles win against Joshi / Zoe Angell of Carnegie Mellon. Slovak also partnered with Martin Lopez to best Budin and Kiersten Brown of Mercyhurst, 6-1.

Slippery Rock continues the individual portion of its 2023-24 season Sept. 14-17 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Atlantic Region Championships in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
