Rock splits matches on day two of FSU Classic

The Slippery Rock volleyball team exited the opening weekend of the 2023 season with a 3-1 record after splitting a pair of matches Saturday at the FSU Classic. After losing to Anderson to open the day, SRU defeated host Fairmont State.

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team closed its time at the Fairmont State Volleyball Classic by splitting a pair of matches Saturday.

Following a three-set (25-18, 25-22, 25-11) loss to open the day against Anderson University, The Rock finished strong by earning a three-set 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 victory over host Fairmont State University.

Saturday's split gives The Rock a 3-1 record through the opening weekend of the 2023 season, marking the first time since 2017 that SRU has won at least three of its first four matches of the year.

Erica Selfridge and Mary Berger both earned spots on the FSC Classic All-Tournament Team. Selfridge closed the weekend by recording 42 kills, 66 digs and five aces over four matches while Berger registered 23 kills and eight blocks on the weekend.

Saturday's leaders included Selfridge with 21 kills and 30 digs while Callie Chevalier totaled 12 kills and six blocks followed by Berger and Lauren VonderHaar with matching 11-kill, six-block efforts.

Jaeden Yost guided the offense with back-to-back 20-assist matches in addition to serving four aces and tallying 18 total digs.

Kate Lachendro had 27 digs over the two matches, giving her 57 for the weekend. Lahcendro now ranks 16th in program history with 1,201 digs.

Following its three-set loss to Anderson, Slippery Rock rallied to earn a solid three-set victory over Fairmont State to close the invitational.

Selfridge paced the attack with a 14-kill, 17-dig double-double versus the Fighting Falcons. Chevalier added eight kills, nine digs and two blocks while the trio of Berger, VonderHaar and Chelsie Wheeler all posted six kills. Berger also tallied four blocks with Lachendro making 14 digs and two aces.

SRU put the opening set away by taking four of the final six points of the set for a 25-17 win.

The Rock once again was dominant late in the second set by going on a 7-1 run late to pull off the 25-19 victory. Berger and Chevalier combined for back-to-back blocks to finish the second set.

As was the case in the second set, Slippery Rock once again earned seven of the final eight points in third-and-deciding-set en route to a 25-19 match-clinching victory.
