BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -
Amaia Balaguer Brau advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles draw to lead the Slippery Rock University women's tennis team on day two of the 2023 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region Championships at the Burt Reese Tennis Center on the campus of Bloomsburg University.

Slippery Rock affiliated athletes won three of their four second-round matches Friday to occupy nearly a quarter of the Round of 16 spots.

Balaguer Brau and Gabriela del Val del Toro each earned decisive victories with Balaguer Brau besting Charleston's Claudia Pastor 6-2, 6-2 and del Val del Toro posting a 6-3, 6-3 win against UC's Riva Hondiashvilli.

The Rock's third Round of 16 entry was Nuria Martin Lopez, who outlasted Shreya Chakraborty of Bluefield State with a comeback 6-7, 7-5, 10-5 victory.

The lone setback for SRU in the second round was Dari Sakhanova's close loss to Kiersten Brown of Mercyhurst. Sakhanova took the opening set, 6-2, but Brown was able to rally with a 6-2 win in the second and a final 10-7 tiebreaker to claim the win.

While Martin Lopez lost to Connor via retirement and del Val del Toro fell to Katy Graydon of Indiana 6-0, 6-4 in the Round of 16, Balaguer Brau ensured SRU would have a representative in the quarterfinals.

Facing Fairmont State's Maria Fonseca, Balaguer Brau kept her championship hopes alive by way of a 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 victory. The ninth seed in this year's tournament, Balaguer Brau will play third-seeded Sofiia Krasikova of Charleston in Saturday's quarter final match which is slated to begin at 11 a.m.

No stranger to success at an ITA regional championship event, Balaguer Brau was the runner-up in last season's ITA East Regional Championship singles draw when she was a freshman at St. Thomas Aquinas.
