PUEBLO, Colo. – Slippery Rock University junior distance runner
Anna Igims placed 15th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in her debut appearance at the NCAA Division II National Championships Thursday evening at Colorado State University-Pueblo's Thunderbowl.
Â
Igims finished seventh in her heat and 15th overall in the preliminary round of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, just narrowly missing the 12-athlete cutoff for Friday's finals by 2.65 seconds.
Â
She clocked a time of 11:03.70 while racing at high altitude for the first time and making her first career appearance at a National Championship meet. The 12th and final qualifier for the finals ran 11:01.05.
Â
"I am tremendously proud of the way Anna competed tonight," said
Bobby Over, SRU distance coach. "She was in a pack with the leaders fighting for a qualifying spot deep in the race while trying to adjust to running at high altitude and she nearly pulled it off. She had a great year in all three seasons and tonight was a great way to cap this year for her."
Â
Igims is one of two SRU women and four total SRU student-athletes competing at the National Championships this week in Colorado. All three of the others are throwers that will compete Saturday.
Trinity Clark will throw the javelin at 1:30 p.m. (ET) to close out the women's entries for SRU, while Dalton Anderson will throw the javelin at 4:45 p.m. (ET) and John Eakin will throw the shot put at 7:05 p.m. (ET) for The Rock men.
