SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's outdoor track and field team sits first in the team standings after the second day of competition at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships wrapped up Friday evening from SRU's William Lennox Track.
Â
The Rock will enter the final day of competition Saturday with an 8.5-point lead in the team standings in what is shaping up to be an exciting battle for the team trophy. The Rock enter Saturday with 48.5 points and are searching for their 17th PSAC Outdoor title and their first since 2019. Defending champion Millersville sits second with 40 points, followed by Edinboro in third with 34 points and Shippensburg in fourth with 33 points. Kutztown rounds out the top five with 27 points.
Â
Five event finals were contested Friday to leave 14 total event finals left to be decided Saturday on the last day of action. The other events Friday were preliminary rounds on the track to set up Saturday finals.
Â
The highlight of the day for Slippery Rock came in the last event of the day when
Anna Igims won the 3,000-meter steeplechase to pick up the first individual title for The Rock this spring. She led wire-to-wire and ran away from the field in 10:49.56 to earn her first career individual PSAC title.
Maddie Grillo took fifth in the event in 11:37.81 to give SRU 14 points in the steeplechase.
Â
The Rock also got an All-PSAC finish from
Tiffany Jolayemi in the discus. After a disappointing day for her in the hammer yesterday, Jolayemi bounced back in a big way to take third in the discus, despite entering the event as the No. 15 seed. She uncorked a throw of 41.46 meters on her fifth throw of the competition to score six points for the team.
Â
Slippery Rock got a strong showing from its multi-event athletes with 10 total points in the heptathlon.
Lorna Speigle took fourth with 4,199 points, followed by
Dani MacBeth in fifth with 4,114 points and
Madelyn Miller in eighth with 3,994 points.
Â
SRU grabbed four points in the long jump with
Aleks Brozeski taking fifth with a leap of 5.50 meters and picked up a half-point in the high jump with
Amera Coleman tying for eighth with a clearance of 1.51 meters.
Â
Slippery Rock also qualified for five event finals during preliminary rounds Friday. The 4x100-meter relay posted the No. 2 qualifying time of 46.88 seconds with
Samantha Gilbert,
Haley Morgan,
Regan Johnson and
Thai-Lin Pierce teaming on that effort. Gilbert also earned a spot in the 100-meter final with the No. 4 mark (12.12).
Â
Rachel Veneziano posted the No. 2 qualifying mark in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.89 and
Chaley Younkin earned the No. 5 qualifying mark in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.00 seconds. The final qualifier Friday came from
Jordan Klick, who was the fifth-best in the 800-meter prelims in 2:18.36.
Â
Saturday's final day of competition is set to begin at 11 a.m. in the field events and at 12:30 p.m. on the track. For a full schedule, link to buy tickets, links to live results and a full breakdown of the live video available for the meet, head over to the
