Plassio leads Rock women on day one at PSAC meet

Katie Plassio earned All-PSAC honors Thursday evening in the 10,000-meter run to lead The Rock women on the opening day of the PSAC Championships hosted by SRU.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's track and field team picked up 14 points in two event finals on the opening day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships Thursday from the William Lennox Track at SRU.
 
The Rock women sit fourth in the team standings with 14 points after the opening day of the three-day meet with two of the 21 total events in the books. The lone event finals that took place Thursday were the hammer throw and the 10,000-meter run and SRU scored in both.
 
Millersville used a strong showing in the hammer to jump out to a day one lead with 20 points. Edinboro used a strong showing in the 10,000-meter run to score 18 points, while East Stroudsburg also got a strong showing in the hammer to tie Edinboro with 18 points. Slippery Rock is fourth with 14 points as the only other team to score more than four points Thursday.
 
The Rock got one All-PSAC (top three) performance on the opening day with Katie Plassio taking third place in the 10,000-meter run in 37:43.45. Marianne Abdalah followed in fourth place in 38:08 to give SRU 11 total points in the event.
 
The other points Thursday came from Rachel Hutchinson, who took sixth in the hammer with a season-best throw of 48.73 meters to pick up three points for the team.
 
The only other events contested Thursday were the first four events of the seven-event heptathlon. Slippery Rock is well-represented in the top 10 going into Friday with three athletes in the top eight, led by Lorna Speigle in third place with 2,657 points. Dani MacBeth sits sixth with 2,535 points and Madelyn Miller is seventh with 2,528 points. Alison Lamoreaux rounds out the SRU entries in 14th after the first day with 2,250 points.
