Rock lacrosse cruises by Edinboro, 21-2

Slippery Rock jumped out to an 11-1 lead in the first quarter and rolled to a 21-2 win over Edinboro Thursday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-1 first quarter lead and cruised to a 21-2 victory over Edinboro Thursday evening in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
The Rock close out the first round of PSAC West divisional play with a 7-4 overall record and a 3-3 mark in PSAC West games. Edinboro slips to 2-9 overall and 0-6 in divisional games.
 
Slippery Rock scored four times in the first three minutes of the game and was never really challenged Thursday. The Rock put up a 20-1 advantage in shots in the first quarter and held Edinboro without a single shot in the second or third quarters. SRU finished with advantages of 40-2 in total shots, 22-3 in draw controls and 20-17 in ground balls. The Rock limited the Fighting Scots to 7-of-23 on clear attempts and caused 19 turnovers in the game.
 
A total of 13 different players scored goals for Slippery Rock with Lauren Searles leading the way with three goals and three assists. Camryn Whipple added three goals and one assist and Brooke Wisniewski scored three goals to give SRU three players with hat tricks.
 
Charleigh Rondeau scored one goal and handed out two assists to go with a game-high 15 draw controls and three ground balls. Maddie Blazey and Ida Modin each scored two goals and Olivia Fox, Rachel Mahoney, Erin Melcher, Krysta Frankowski and Ella Koslowski all scored one goal and handed out one assist. Leora Owings and Victoria Ziemba capped the scoring with one goal apiece.
 
Nicole Masi led the defense with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Alexa Juska had three caused turnovers and Amelia Nitsche had two.
 
Slippery Rock played two goalies for a half with Gillian O'Rourke playing the first half and Izzie Sutton playing the second half. They both faced one shot and allowed one goal.
 
Edinboro was led by Rylee Jones with two goals and three ground balls. Savannah Fischer made six saves in goal.
 
Slippery Rock sits in the third and final playoff position in the PSAC West after the first round of divisional play, tied with Gannon at 3-3. The Rock own the tiebreaker over Gannon by way of a head-to-head win in their first meeting.
 
SRU will get a rare weekend off this weekend and will return to action next Wednesday on the road at Lock Haven University.
