Rock defeats Edinboro, 7-0

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team recorded a 7-0 shutout against Edinboro Wednesday afternoon at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pennsylvania.

ERIE, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team recorded a 7-0 shutout against Edinboro Wednesday afternoon at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pennsylvania.
 
The Rock's latest Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division victory improves their record to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in league matches while the Fighting Scots drop to 5-10 overall and 2-2 inside the conference. SRU has now won three of its last four matches.
 
SRU began what would eventually result in its second shutout of the season with a 6-1 victory from the second-flight duo of Nuria Martin Lopez and Gabriela del Val del Toro over Maria Clara Salomao and Cecillia Carayol.
 
Dari Sakhanova and Tina Slovak proceeded to capture the team doubles point for The Rock via a solid 6-2 showing against Ana Nadai and Sandra Riecken out of the third flight.
 
The Rock's top duo of Teddi Isherwood and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez maintained Slippery Rock's momentum with a final doubles victory courtesy of a 6-4 triumph versus Rafaella Negrao De Almeida and Marina Zottele.
 
Gonzalez Sanchez then posted The Rock's first singles point of the match against Almeida in the first flight as she earned a 6-0 first set win before Almeida retired from the contest.
 
The middle of SRU's lineup accounted for the next two points when Sakhanova bested Riecken from the third flight (6-1, 6-0) followed by Martin Lopez picking up the match-deciding point by way of a 6-0, 6-1 victory out of the fourth slot versus Zottele.
 
The remainder of the competition featured Georgie Lancaster registering a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Salomao in sixth flight action, Slovak bettering Nadai 6-3, 6-2 in the fifth flight with del Val del Toro closing the day in a three-set decision against Carayol (6-1, 4-6, 10-6).
 
Slippery Rock continues PSAC West competition 4 p.m. Friday against Seton Hill University at the SRU Tennis Courts. Prior to the match, SRU will recognize Gonzalez Sanchez and del Val del Toro for their contributions to the program over their careers as part of its 2023 Senior Day.
