SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's track and field team recorded 26 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks, one NCAA provisional mark and six event wins at the Dave Labor Invitational hosted by SRU Saturday at the William Lennox Track.
Â
The meet, which was the first of four home meets this spring for Slippery Rock, featured a storm delay in the middle of the day after wind gusts of more than 60 miles per hour ripped through the stadium. The storm knocked the power out in the stadium and lifted the jumping pits out of the stadium. After the worst of the storm passed, the meet was able to resume but strong winds the rest of the day and evening made competing difficult for everyone.
Â
Slippery Rock's lone NCAA mark of the meet came from
Trinity Clark, who won the javelin with a throw of 43.63 meters to lead The Rock to three top five places in the event.
Skylar Sherry was third at 39.76 meters and
Isabella Bartoletti was fifth at 35.65 meters to give SRU three PSAC marks in the javelin.
Â
The Rock also won the hammer and the shot put to pick up wins in three of the four throwing events.
Sarah Corrie won the shot put with a toss of 13.39 meters and
Olivia Heckman also hit the PSAC standard in fourth at 12.26 meters.
Tiffany Jolayemi won the hammer with a throw of 51.37 meters to lead a 1-2 sweep for SRU with
Rachel Hutchinson placing second at 47.672 meters.
Â
The Rock picked up three wins on the track, including the 4x100-meter relay, where
Samantha Gilbert,
Haley Morgan,
Regan Johnson and
Thai-Lin Pierce teamed up to post a time of 47.47 seconds. Gilbert and Pierce also hit the PSAC mark in the open 100-meter dash with Gilbert placing second in 12.45 seconds and Pierce finishing third in 12.50 seconds, while Morgan took third in the 200-meter dash in 26.58 seconds.
Â
Anna Igims won the 3,000-meter steeplechase early in the day before the storm came through with a time of 11:24.17 to lead SRU to four PSAC qualifiers in the event.
Marie Scarpa was fourth in 12:13.11, followed by
Morgan Dennison in fifth in 12:25.72 and
Maddie Grillo in sixth in 12:25.93.
Â
The final event win came from
Rachel Veneziano, who took home the 400-meter hurdle title in 1:07.98.
Chaley Younkin led the way in the 100-meter hurdles with a second place finish in 15.20 seconds to lead SRU to four PSAC marks there.
Chalondra Clarke was fourth in 15.71 seconds, followed by
Madelyn Miller in ninth in 15.89 seconds and
Emma Fox in 11th in 16.00 seconds.
Â
Slippery Rock got four PSAC marks in the pole vault with
Kendall Grossman leading the way in third place with a clearance of 3.55 meters.
Olivia Sentle was fifth at 3.40 meters, followed by
Allie Taylor and
Sarah Schneider in a tie for eighth at 3.25 meters. The pole vault was moved indoors to The Vault Schack in Volant due to the unsafe conditions.
Â
SRU picked up three PSAC marks in the long jump with
Baylee Blauser leading the way with a runner-up finish and a leap of 5.48 meters. Gilbert was fifth at 5.44 meters and
Aleks Brozeski was sixth at 5.38 meters.
Alice Bogia led the way in the triple jump with a second place showing and a leap of 10.21 meters into a strong headwind.
Â
The final PSAC mark came from
Paige Griffith, who took third in the high jump with a clearance of 1.55 meters.
Â
Slippery Rock will compete at a pair of local meets next week, sending athletes to Grove City College Wednesday for the Grove City Mid-Week Meet and sending the majority of the team to Westminster College Saturday for the Westminster Invitational.
