Rock falls 13-10 at No. 25 Mercyhurst

Slippery Rock outscored No. 25 Mercyhurst 6-3 in the second half, but couldn't overcome a six-goal halftime deficit in a 13-10 loss Saturday in Erie.

ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team outscored No. 25 Mercyhurst University 6-3 in the second half, but couldn't overcome a 10-4 halftime deficit in dropping a 13-10 decision Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game from Saxon Stadium.
 
The Lakers jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the opening 15 minutes and pushed the advantage out to 10-4 with a goal just five seconds before halftime. The Rock posted a 5-3 advantage on the scoreboard in the third quarter and scored the only goal of the fourth quarter, but couldn't overcome the deficit.
 
Mercyhurst improves to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in PSAC West games. Slippery Rock slips to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in PSAC West action.
 
The Lakers finished the game with a 30-27 advantage in total shots and a 24-23 edge in ground balls, while Slippery Rock posted a 16-11 advantage in draw controls.
 
The Rock got three goals and one assist from Charleigh Rondeau, who also pulled down a game-high 11 draw controls to go along with five ground balls. Camryn Whipple added two goals and one assist and Lauren Searles and Brooke Wisniewski each scored two goals.
 
Leora Owings rounded out the goal scorers with one goal and Olivia Fox handed out one assist to round out the point scorers.
 
Gillian O'Rourke made the start in goal and allowed 13 goals to go along with seven saves in the first 45 minutes. Izzie Sutton played the final quarter and allowed no goals to go along with three saves.
 
Mercyhurst was paced by five goals from Meghan Nasman and three goals and two assists from Whitley Easton. Paige Maneri made nine saves in goal to pick up the win.
 
Slippery Rock returns home from a two-game swing through the Erie schools to host Edinboro Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the final game of the first round of PSAC West play.
