Rock blanks Clarion, 7-0

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team earned a 7-0 PSAC West victory on the road Thursday at Clarion.

CLARION, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team earned a 7-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division victory on the road Thursday at Clarion.
 
The victory improves SRU's record to 6-5 overall and 1-1 inside the PSAC West while Clarion drops to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in conference matches following the loss.
 
Slippery Rock earned the win, its 26th consecutive victory over the Golden Eagles, by sweeping the doubles portion of the match followed by six convincing singles wins.
 
In the top doubles flight, Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez and Teddi Isherwood pushed their winning streak to four matches with a 6-0 victory against Alexis Strouse and Dava Lion.
 
At No. 2 doubles, Gabriela del Val del Toro and Nuria Martin Lopez picked up their 13th victory as a team in 2022-23 courtesy of a 6-1 win over Josie Beckerleg and Savannah Buttery.
 
The third doubles flight saw Tina Slovak and Dari Sakhanova register a 6-0 shutout of Alyson Fisher and Charlie Allison. Slovak and Sakhanova are now an impressive 8-1 as a team in third-flight dual match play.  
 
SRU opened the singles contest against the Golden Eagles with matching 6-0, 6-0 victories out of the fourth and third flights, respectively, from Martin Lopez against Fisher and Sakhanova versus Beckerleg. Sakhanova has now won seven of her first 10 career matches when representing The Rock.
 
Gonzalez Sanchez proceeded to clinch the team victory for Slippery Rock via a 6-1, 6-0 triumph in the first flight against Lion.
 
With the team victory already secured, Slippery Rock went on to close the day with three more singles wins as Georgie Lancaster bested Buttery in the sixth flight (6-0, 6-1) followed by a 6-2, 6-0 besting of Strouse by del Val del Toro with the match being capped off by way of Slovak's 6-1, 6-1 win over Allison.
 
Following her latest win, del Val del Toro is now 18-5 on the year.
 
SRU now turns its sights to a pair of key Atlantic Region weekend matches.
 
The Rock first plays the 23rd-ranked University of Charleston 3 p.m. Saturday at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pennsylvania before returning to the SRU Tennis courts for a 12 p.m. match versus West Virginia State University.
