ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team won a snow-shortened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game Wednesday with a 13-3 victory at Gannon University after officials called the game with a full quarter to play.
Â
The Rock jumped out to a 9-2 halftime lead and extended the advantage to 13-3 after three quarters while a heavy band of snow blanketed the field at McConnell Family Stadium. With the outcome of the game likely in hand and conditions deteriorating, officials decided to call the game before starting the fourth quarter, citing field conditions and player safety. By NCAA rule, since three full quarters were played, the game will be recorded as an official contest with SRU picking up the 13-3 victory and all stats recorded counting for the teams and individual players.
Â
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 6-3 overall and levels its PSAC West record at 2-2. Gannon slips to 1-8 overall and 1-3 in PSAC West games with the loss.
Â
The Rock were in control from the early stages Wednesday, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and holding Gannon off the scoresheet for nearly 20 minutes to open the game. SRU led 9-2 at the break and outscored the Golden Knights 4-1 in the third quarter to put the game away.
