Rock women finish fourth at Shamrock Invitational

Slippery Rock was the top non-Division I team at the Shamrock Invitational this weekend with a fourth place finish in the team standings.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University women's track and field team closed its spring break trip with a fourth place finish at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational that wrapped up Saturday from Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach.
 
The Rock were the highest finishing non-Division I team in the final team standings in fourth place overall with 82.5 points. Duke won the team title with 247 points, followed by James Madison with 111.5 points and Coastal Carolina with 87 points. Mount Saint Mary's ronded out the top five with 41 points to make The Rock the only non-Division I team in the top five. A total of 32 different teams tallied points at the three-day competition that began Thursday.
 
Slippery Rock finished the meet with 17 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks and 17 top 10 finishes in seeded events.
 
Slippery Rock had five distance runners record top five finishes at the meet, led by Katie Plassio with a runner-up finish in the 10,000-meter run in 38:43. Marianne Abdalah took fifth in the same race in 39:03.71. Anna Igims was third in the 5,000-meter run in 17:44.19 and Maddie Grillo and Marie Scarpa both hit PSAC marks in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Grillo was third in 11:57.97 and Scarpa finished fourth in 12:05.51.
 
Slippery Rock got a pair of PSAC marks in the 100-meter dash with Haley Morgan finishing 18th in 12.59 seconds and Regan Johnson placing 20th in 12.60 seconds. They also teamed with Amaya Robinson and Baylee Blauser to place sixth in the 4x100-meter relay in 49.10 seconds.
 
SRU got one PSAC mark in the 200-meter dash from Lorna Speigle during the heptathlon when she clocked a time of 26.19 seconds and also got one PSAC mark in the 400-meter dash with Alice Bogia finishing 17th in 59.87 seconds. Speigle ended up third overall in the heptathlon with 4,059 points. Dani MacBeth was fifth with 3,672 points, followed by Madelyn Miller in eighth with 3,283 points and Alison Lamoreaux in 10th with 2,753 points.
 
The final PSAC marks on the track came in the hurdle races, where Rachel Veneziano was 11th in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.26 and Chaley Younkin was 15th in 15.09 seconds.
 
The Rock had four top 10 finishes in the throwing events, led by Sarah Corrie with a second place effort in the shot put with a toss of 13.41 meters. Olivia Heckman took fifth in the shot with a toss of 12.46 meters. Tiffany Jolayemi was 10th in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.64 meters and also took ninth in the discus with a throw of 36.84 meters.
 
Allie Taylor and Kendall Grossman tied for fourth in the pole vault with PSAC qualifying clearances of 3.35 meters and Aleks Brozeski rounded out the final PSAC marks of the weekend with a 13th place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.34 meters.
 
Slippery Rock will take next weekend off before hosting the first of four home meets this spring with the Dave Labor Invitational set for April 1.
