Rock drops PSAC opener at No. 19 Seton Hill

No. 19 Seton Hill closed the game on a 10-2 run to pull away for a 14-5 win over Slippery Rock Saturday.

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The 19th ranked Seton Hill University women's lacrosse team outscored Slippery Rock University 10-2 in the second half to pull away for a 14-5 win Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game from Dick's Sporting Goods Field.
 
The Rock slip to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in PSAC games with both of their losses on the season coming on the road against teams ranked in the top 20 in the national poll. Seton Hill improves to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC West.
 
The teams traded goals in the opening period and went to the second quarter tied at 2-2. Seton Hill posted a 2-0 edge in the second to lead 4-2 at halftime. The Griffins then outscored SRU 5-2 in the third period to break the game open and closed the game with a 5-1 run in the fourth.
 
Seton Hill finished the game with a 41-20 advantage in total shots and were dominant in the draw circle, winning eight of the first nine draw controls and finishing with a 15-8 edge in draw controls. The Griffins also put together a 21-17 edge in ground balls.
 
Slippery Rock senior Charleigh Rondeau finished with three draw controls to bring her career total to 271, tying Lauren Laubach for the all-time SRU record. She will become the solo record holder with one more draw control.
 
The Rock got one goal and one assist from Olivia Fox to lead the attack Saturday. Ida Modin, Brooke Wisniewski, Rachel Mahoney and Erin Melcher each scored one goal to account for the rest of the points.
 
Leora Owings tallied three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Amelia Nitsche and Alexa Juska both added two caused turnovers.
 
Gillian O'Rourke made 12 saves in goal to drop her first game of the season, falling to 2-1.
 
Seton Hill was led by Carleigh Sutfin with three goals and three assists and Skyla Orlowski with three goals and two assists. Kyleigh Hessian picked up the win in goal with 10 saves.
 
Slippery Rock will return home from a three-game road swing and host Lock Haven University in a PSAC West match Wednesday at 4 p.m.
