ORLANDO, Florida - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team closed out its spring break trip with a close 4-3 loss to No. 34 Saint Thomas Aquinas College Friday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

Slippery Rock will return home from its trip south with an overall record of 4-4 while the nationally ranked Spartans improve to 12-2 in 2022-23.

Following a 6-0 loss by SRU freshmen Dari Sakhanova and Tina Slovak against Amaia Balaguer Brau and Paula Palero in the third flight, The Rock's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams captured wins to give Slippery Rock the team doubles point.

Nuria Martin Lopez and Gabriela del Val del Toro first beat Jemima Parkinson and Elita Silins, 6-3, before Teddi Isherwood and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez posted a quality 6-2 triumph in the top flight against Ebba Rosberg and Samanta Villegas Robles.

However, Slippery Rock was ultimately unable to finish off the win as Saint Thomas Aquinas took four of the six singles bouts in the match to earn the narrow team victory.

The Rock's singles wins came in the top two flights where Gonzalez Sanchez bested Rosberg 7-6, 2-6, 11-9 and del Val del Toro downed Viktoriia Pavlovets 6-1, 6-1. del Val del Toro has now won 16 of her first 20 singles matches this year (dual+tournament) while Gonzalez Sanchez climbs above the .500 mark on the season at 10-9.

The Spartans swept flights 3-6 in the win. Over the middle singles flights, Palero defeated Sakhanova 6-3, 6-4 while Robles earned a 6-3, 6-2 win against Martin Lopez. The fifth and sixth flight outings saw Brau recorded a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Isherwood and Silins took a 6-1, 7-5 decision from Georgie Lancaster.

Slippery Rock returns home to host Salem University for a 4 p.m. match March 22 at the SRU Tennis Courts.
