Rock rolls by Palm Beach Atlantic, 22-6

Despite missing five starters Tuesday night in Florida, The Rock lacrosse team put up a season-high 22 goals on the way to a 22-6 win at Palm Beach Atlantic.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team put together a dominant effort on the way to a 22-6 victory on the road at Palm Beach Atlantic University Tuesday night to close out a two-game spring break trip in the state of Florida.

Slippery Rock went into the game missing five members of its starting lineup, which were hampered by heat-related illness after playing Sunday at Lynn University with temperatures in the high 80s in Florida. Those members that missed the game included the nation's leader in draw controls, Charleigh Rondeau, who remains just four draw controls shy of the SRU all-time career record. SRU was also without the services of defenders Sara Danowski and Amelia Nitsche and attackers Camryn Whipple and Ida Modin, who ranked second and third on the team in scoring going into Tuesday night.

Despite missing those key pieces of the lineup, The Rock put together their most complete effort of the season, tallying a season-high 22 goals to improve to 4-1 on the year. Palm Beach Atlantic drops to 2-3 overall with the loss.

Slippery Rock scored the first six goals of the game and jumped out to a 10-2 lead midway through the second quarter. Palm Beach cut the margin to 11-5 by halftime, but SRU scored seven unanswered goals in the third period to break the game open and closed the second half on an 11-1 run.

The Rock finished the night with five different players tallying at least a hat trick, led by Brooke Wisniewski with five goals and Erin Melcher with three goals and two assists. Lauren Searles and Olivia Fox both chipped in three goals and one assist and Eryn Little added three goals.

Rachel Mahoney tallied three assists and four draw controls and Maddie Blazey added two goals and one assist. Sydney Ulmer scored one goal and dished out one assist to cap the players with multiple points.

The Rock got one goal each from Victoria Ziemba and Krysta Frankowski and one assist from Leora Owings to round out the scorers. A total of 11 different players tallied points in the win.

SRU was credited with five caused turnovers with Grace Garbatowicz leading the way with two takeaways. The Rock limited Palm Beach to 6-of-11 on clear attempts while going 15-of-18 on their own clears.

Gillian O'Rourke earned the win in goal after playing the first 49:27 and allowing six goals to go along with four saves. Izzie Sutton played the final 10:33 and saved all three shots she faced.

Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 36-16 in total shots, 29-13 in shots on goal, 17-14 in draw controls and 19-9 in ground balls.

Ella Howlin paced the Sailfish with three goals while Addyson Johnson added two goals and Olivia Larges scored one goal and handed out one assist. Courtney Rausch started the game in goal and took the loss after allowing seven goals and making three saves in the first 11:50. Georgia Karns played the final 48:10, allowing 15 goals and recording four saves.

Slippery Rock will return to Pennsylvania to close out a three-game road swing when it travels to No. 19 Seton Hill University Saturday to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play with a 1 p.m. game in Greensburg.
