Rock cruises to 6-1 win vs. Frostburg State

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team earned a 6-1 non-conference victory against Frostburg State Saturday at the PA Tennis Academy in Wexford, Pennsylvania.

WEXFORD, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team earned a 6-1 non-conference victory against Frostburg State University Saturday at the PA Tennis Academy in Wexford, Pennsylvania.
 
Saturday's victory improves The Rock's record to 1-2 overall in 2022-23 while the Bobcats drop to 2-2 following the loss.
 
Slippery Rock set the tone for the evening by sweeping the doubles portion of the match to earn the first point of the evening.
 
The freshman duo of Dari Sakhanova and Tina Slovak earned a convincing 6-1 win from the third flight over Rabiatu Ladan and Madison Toothman in the first decision of the contest followed by the veteran pairing of Gabriela del Val del Toro and Nuria Martin Lopez securing the doubles point for The Rock via a 6-3 second flight victory against Julia Ramos and Mariaspa Kotsiou.
 
Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez and Teddi Isherwood finished off the doubles sweep for SRU by way of a 6-4 first flight win against Lorena Pintar and Alyssa Kush.
 
The top half of Slippery Rock's singles lineup proceeded to capture consecutive points to secure the team victory for The Rock as Gonzalez Sanchez downed Kush (6-1, 6-2) while del Val del Toro won her second flight match against Kotsiou 6-4, 6-3 with Sakhanova registering the match-winning point against Pintar 6-2, 6-4.
 
After her win in the first set, Sakhanova trailed 4-0 in the second, but served her way back into contention en route to the eventual 6-4 comeback win.
 
The back portion of SRU's singles lineup also collected wins with Georgie Lancaster defeating Toothman 6-2, 6-0 in the sixth flight followed by a 6-3, 6-0 win from Isherwood against Immanuella Odiong in the fifth slot.
 
The night ended with what was the closest bout of the day in the fourth flight where Ramos narrowly outlasted Martin Lopez 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Martin Lopez nearly finished off a perfect day for The Rock as she battled back from a 5-2 deficit in the third set before Ramos was able to capture the deciding point.
 
Slippery Rock next returns to the road for a 5 p.m. match Feb. 24 at Ashland University.
