WOOSTER, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team earned a 6-1 non-conference road victory against Ashland University Friday.
Â
The win, Slippery Rock's second in as many contests, improves SRU's record to 2-2 on the season while the Eagles drop to 4-3 in 2022-23 following the loss. The Rock earned the win by taking two of three doubles matches from Ashland followed by three consecutive singles bouts to clinch the team victory.
Â
Ashland's top pairing of Ana Penteado and Constanza Arancibia recorded a 6-1 win against
Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez and
Teddi Isherwood to begin the match, but any thoughts of the Eagles taking the doubles point was quickly put to rest thanks to SRU's No. 2 and No. 3 teams.
Â
Gabriela del Val del Toro and
Nuria Martin Lopez first defeated Claudia Adcock and Kortney Reed from the second flight, 6-3, followed by the rookie duo of
Tina Slovak and
Dari Sakhanova defeating Anna Corbel and Alley Stoehr, 6-4, from the third flight to give The Rock the doubles point.
Â
Martin Lopez started the singles portion of Friday's match with a clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Adcock in the fourth flight for what was the fourth win in her last five outings.
Â
Gonzalez Sanchez followed Martin Lopez's win with a triumph of her own in the form of a 6-4, 6-0 win against Arancibia at No. 1 singles. The win pushed Gonzalez Sanchez's season record to 8-7.
Â
del Val del Toro proceeded to seal Slippery Rock's win by downing Penteado 6-0, 6-2 in second-flight competition. She has now won 12 of her first 16 matches dating back to the fall portion of the season.
Â
Ashland was able to avoid the shutout thanks to a close 1-6, 7-5, 10-8 fifth-flight victory by Reed against Isherwood.
Â
However, SRU closed the night on a high note as Sakhanova bested Corbel 6-3, 6-3 from the third flight with
Georgie Lancaster ended the match in a 6-4. 7-6 sixth-flight triumph versus Stoehr.
Â
Sakhanova has won two of her first three matches at SRU while Lancaster continues to push her winning percentage towards the .500 mark with two straight victories to improve to 4-6 this season.
Â
Slippery Rock is off for a week before heading south for its annual spring break trip where it will play matches against Eastern Florida State College (March 12), Texas A&M Kingsville (March 14), Dallas Baptist (March 15) and Saint Thomas Aquinas (March 17).
