Rock beats Eastern Florida State

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team opened its annual spring break trip with a 6-1 victory Sunday at Eastern Florida State College.

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team opened its annual spring break trip with a 6-1 victory Saturday at Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne, Florida.
 
Sunday's win marked The Rock's third consecutive victory, improving their record to 3-2 on the year overall. Easter Florida State, one of the top junior college teams in the state of Florida, drops to 6-3 following the loss.
 
SRU earned the victory by sweeping the doubles portion of match followed by taking five of six singles contests.
 
In what was the first official result of The Rock's Florida trip, Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez and Teddi Isherwood earned a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles over Helena Jokanovic and Simona Hantzis. Jokanovic and Hantzis are ranked 16th in the most recent ITA junior college national doubles rankings.
 
The rookie duo of Tina Slovak and Dari Sakhanova clinched the doubles point for SRU by way of a 6-2 win against Paige Noble Lucas and Lucia Lucas Martinez. Slovak and Sakhanova are a perfect 3-0 as a team this year.
 
With the team doubles point already in hand, Gabriela del Val del Toro and Nuria Martin Lopez proceeded to make it a clean doubles sweep courtesy of a 7-5 win against Gloria Barcaro and Emma Sanchez from the second flight.
 
SRU went on to claim the team victory with three straight singles win as Isherwood beat Luisa Renovales in the fifth flight (6-0, 6-1), Gonzalez Sanchez downed Sanchez, who entered the match ranked 33rd in the national JUCO rankings, (6-4, 6-0) followed by a 6-3, 6-2 match-clinching victory by Sakhanova over Lucas Martinez in the third flight.
 
Sunday's wins give Gonzalez Sanchez and Sakhanova personal three-match winning streaks.
 
The Rock closed the day with two more victories. Martin Lopez picked up her 10th victory of the season via a 6-2, 7-5 win from the fourth flight against Jokanovic and del Val del Toro improved her team-best singles record to 13-4 following a tight 4-6, 7-6, 10-3 win against Ksenia Krupniakova.
 
EFSC was able to avoid the shutout thanks to Noble Lucas, who bested Georgie Lancaster from the sixth flight 7-6, 6-2.
 
Slippery Rock returns to competition 11:30 a.m. Tuesday against Texas A&M Kingsville at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida.
