Rock loses at St. Bonaventure, 5-2

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team lost a road match at Division I St. Bonaventure, 5-2, Saturday.

OLEAN, N.Y. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost a road match at Division I St. Bonaventure University, 5-2, Saturday.
 
Saturday's contest was just the second of the season for 0-2 Slippery Rock while the Bonnies were playing their eighth dual match of the year as they improved to 3-5 in 2022-23.
 
The Rock's two wins Saturday came by way of singles victories from Gabriela del Val del Toro and Nuria Martin Lopez.
 
del Val del Toro was a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 winner in the second flight over Amelia Haley. In addition to being her first dual match victory of the season, the win also improved del Val del Toro's overall record on the season to a team-best 10-4.  
 
Martin Lopez extended her winning streak to three matches courtesy of a 7-5, 7-5 win in the fourth flight against Anastasia Gubanova. Martin Lopez exits the weekend with a singles mark of 8-5 in 2022-23.
 
The other four singles bouts all went to St. Bonaventure as Alexandra Johnson bested Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez from the first flight (6-2, 6-3) and Isabella Venter defeated Dari Sakhanova (6-1, 6-0) at No. 3 singles in addition to Sienna Smith earning a 6-3, 6-1 win against Teddi Isherwood from the fifth slot with the remaining match going to Kelly Barnes in three sets against Georgie Lancaster at No. 6 singles.
 
The day started with three close doubles wins by St. Bonaventure.
 
Gubanova and Venter defeated Isherwood and Gonzalez Sanchez in the top flight while The Rock's No. 2 doubles pairing of Martin Lopez and del Val del Toro fell 7-5 to Haley and Johnson.
 
The third doubles contest was another close call with Barnes and Smith ultimately outlasting Lancaster and Sakhanova, 7-6.
 
Slippery Rock will play its first match of the season against a fellow Division II team Feb. 18 when it hosts Frostburg State University.
