GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost a three-set Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match to Seton Hill University on the road Saturday 25-21, 25-16, 25-20.
Â
The loss drops The Rock's record in 2023 to 13-14 overall and 5-9 inside the PSAC West while Seton Hill improves to 12-15 overall and 5-9 in league matches. The Rock's loss combined with Pitt-Johnstown's victory against Mercyhurst officially eliminates SRU from PSAC Tournament contention.
Â
Erica Selfridge led The Rock's efforts against Seton Hill by going for 14 kills on a .267 attack percentage and one ace. Selfridge is now 13 kills away from becoming the first Rock athlete since 2016 to record 300 kills in a single-season.
Â
The duo of
Callie Chevalier and
Chelsie Wheeler added to Slippery Rock's attack with nine and seven kills, respectively. Like Selfridge, Chevalier and Wheeler were efficient in their attacks with hitting percentages of .292 and .250.
Â
Jaeden Yost guided the offense with 16 assists in addition to matching Selfridge for team-high honors in aces with one.
Peytan Gullickson and
Jalynn West added eight assists apiece.
Â
Defensively,
Lauren VonderHaar racked up three blocks (one solo / two assisted) to push her season rejection total up to 108 – the eighth highest total in Slippery Rock single-season history. Chevalier also chipped in three blocks.
Â
Libero
Kate Lachendro tallied a match-best 12 digs in the loss as well. Lachendro needs just six more digs to become the ninth athlete in program history to have produced 1,600 digs in a career.
Â
The Rock and Griffins played to a 9-9 tie to begin the match before Seton Hill took the next four points to open a lead it would never relinquish in the opener. Slippery Rock did trim the lead to as little as one point at 17-16, but could never quite complete its comeback as Seton Hill pulled out a 25-21 victory in the first set.
Â
Seton Hill once again used a run midway through a set to give itself separation from The Rock as the Griffins led 16-14 before taking five of the next six points to stretch its advantage out to 21-15 on the way to an eventual 25-16 win.
Â
Slippery Rock was unable to avoid the three-set sweep as the Griffins jumped out to a 12-5 advantage in the third and never looked back for a 25-20 match-deciding win.
Â
Seton Hill closed the match leading The Rock in total kills (40-38), attack percentage (.272-.202) and aces (9-2) while SRU edged the Griffins in digs (45-36) with both teams recording four total blocks. Paige Cole had a 16-kill, 10-dig double-double to lead Seton Hill.
Â
Slippery Rock closes out the regular season with back-to-back home matches at Morrow Field House 7 p.m. Nov. 10 against Indiana (Pa.) and 2 p.m. Nov. 11 versus Pitt-Johnstown on Senior Day.
