Rock scores late vs. IUP to clinch playoff berth

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team clinched a PSAC Tournament berth for the 13th straight season after Libby Zacharyasz scored her second goal against IUP with 34 seconds remaining to win, 2-1.

INDIANA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team clinched a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament berth for the 13th straight season after Libby Zacharyasz scored her second goal against Indiana University (Pa.) with 34 seconds remaining to win, 2-1.
 
With Saturday's victory over IUP marking Slippery Rock's fifth straight win, The Rock improved their record to 10-3-2 overall and 9-2-2 in PSAC West play. The Crimson Hawks fell to 4-7-3 overall and 3-7-2 within the PSAC West following the loss.
 
Zacharyasz scored both of Slippery Rock's goals on the day, the first brace of her career. Sydney Patrick assisted both goals, giving her four assists in the last four games.
 
Zacharyasz's late-game goal was her second game-winner of the year. She also scored with just 3:37 remaining against Edinboro Sept. 20 at home to give SRU a 1-0 win over the Fighting Scots.
 
Patrick, Skylar Munnikhuysen and Ashley Rea all fired four shots on the day, while Zacharyasz led in shots on goal, placing all three of her total shots on cage.
 
Goalkeeper Leah Allman made one save on the day for Slippery Rock, facing six shots.
 
IUP's Hannah Scardina got the Crimson Hawks on the board first with a goal coming in the 16th minute. Taylor Serrano sent a cross from the sideline into the box, where Scardina was able to finish it off in the bottom left of the net.
 
Indiana held its 1-0 lead until the 75th minute, despite taking just six shots and a pair of shots on goal in the contest. On a corner kick from Patrick, Zacharyasz was able to head the ball past IUP goalkeeper Vanessa Berlin, knotting the match at 1-1.
 
Slippery Rock, which only needed a draw to clinch a postseason berth, would eventually find the go-ahead goal In the 90th minute.
 
The Rock earned their seventh corner kick of the match, again, with Patrick looking to Zacharyasz. After the ball bounced around in the box taking deflections off defenders, Zacharyasz was able to pounce on it, scoring with just 34 seconds remaining on the clock at 89:26.
 
On the day, Slippery Rock led in shots (23-6), shots on goal (10-2) and corner kicks (7-0).
 
Slippery Rock's win over IUP is the third straight 2-1 win for Slippery Rock, and the second comeback win in a row. In their last six contests, The Rock have posted a 5-0-1 undefeated record.
 
The Rock will jump back into action 6 p.m. Oct. 25 when they travel to Edinboro.
