LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University tight end
Andrew Miller was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Special Teams Athlete of the Week for his performance in The Rock's win at Gannon Saturday.
Â
Miller, a junior tight end and special teams gunner from Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, picks up his first collegiate honor for his efforts on The Rock's kickoff coverage team.
Â
He tallied a pair of special teams tackles before stealing a possession back for The Rock late in the game. After a kickoff got held up in the wind and dropped to the turf along the sideline, Miller raced in and recovered the ball just before it went out of bounds to secure the onsides kick and give SRU a second straight offensive possession deep in Gannon territory.
Â
The offense would cash that possession in with another touchdown on the way to outscoring Gannon 21-0 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 49-24 win.
Â
Slippery Rock has had at least one player recognized as a PSAC Athlete of the Week after each game of the 2023 season with Miller earning the second straight special teams award after
Ben Lane picked up the honor last week. QB
Brayden Long has been honored twice, WR
Kyle Sheets and RB
Khalid Dorsey have each been honored once and DT
Munchie Johnson has been recognized once.
Â
The Rock will shift focus to their toughest test to date with California (Pa.) set to visit Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Homecoming. The Vulcans are 5-1 overall with a lone loss to nationally ranked Shepherd back on Sept. 16 and are tied with SRU atop the PSAC West standings with perfect 4-0 divisional records.
