Rock loses in three sets at Pitt-Johnstown

The Slippery Rock volleyball team lost a PSAC West road match at Pitt-Johnstown in three sets Friday 25-18, 25-18, 25-15.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division road match at Pitt-Johnstown in three sets Friday 25-18, 25-18, 25-15.

The loss drops The Rock's record to 11-9 overall and 3-4 inside the PSAC West while the Mountain Cats improve to 13-6 overall and 4-3 in league competition.

Erica Selfridge came just short of a double-double Friday with eight kills on a .241 attack percentage to go along with eight digs. Callie Chevalier matched Selfridge with eight kills while Alayna Chizmar added four kills as well.

Middle hitter Mary Berger paced The Rock's defensive efforts with three blocks (two solo / one assisted) in addition to adding four kills on the attack. Libero Kate Lachendro took home team-high honors in digs with 17.

SRU utilized three setters through the duration of the match with freshman Jalynn West leading the trio by turning in a 17-assist, seven-dig, one-ace performance. Jaeden Yost passed out eight assists and Peytan Gullickson handed out six to supplement West's distribution.

A 15-5 UPJ run to open the match proved too much for SRU to comeback from as the Mountain Cats fended off a late Rock push to take the opener 25-18.

The Rock and Mountain Cats went on matching 4-0 runs to start the second set before trading points en route to a 13-13 tie. However, Pitt-Johnstown broke the stalemate with a 5-1 run to pull ahead 19-14 on the way to a 25-18 win.

The Mountain Cats ended any hopes of a Slippery Rock comeback by finishing off the match with a 25-15 triumph in the third and deciding set.

Pitt-Johnstown closed the night holding advantages over Slippery Rock in kills (48-31), attack percentage (.288-.131), aces (7-1), digs (71-54) and total blocks (8-4). Mallory Pinske and Lualis Alvarado registered 12 kills apiece to lead the Mountain Cats.
