Rock loses in five sets at Edinboro

The Slippery Rock volleyball team lost a PSAC West match at Edinboro in five sets (25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12) Friday.

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match to Edinboro in five sets on the road Friday.

With the loss, Slippery Rock's record falls to 4-9 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC West while Edinboro improves to 11-2 overall and 1-0 in league matches following the win. The Fighting Scots were able to extend their winning streak to six following a 25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12 match.

Friday's match marked the fourth fifth-set match Slippery Rock has played this season.

The trio of Abigail Koeller, Chelsie Wheeler and Erica Selfridge led Slippery Rock's efforts against Edinboro.

Koeller had a double-double of 15 kills and 11 digs while Wheeler posted a career-high 15 kills on a .324 attack percentage in addition to three blocks with Selfridge tallying a 14-kills, 19-dig double-double that included a match-best three aces.

Mary Berger produced a team-best five blocks (one solo / four assisted) to go with five kills. Stephanie O'Donnell and Callie Chevalier chipped in three blocks apiece as well with Chevalier also coming away with seven kills.

Kate Lachendro concluded the night with 31 digs, her second match of the year with at least 30 digs while freshman setter Jaeden Yost finished with season-bests of 36 assists and 22 digs.

Neither The Rock or Fighting Scots led by more than three points for the majority of the opening set, but with the score tied at 20-20 Edinboro took five straight points thanks in part to four SRU errors (three attack / one service) on the way to a 25-20 win.

With the score tied 9-9 in the second set, Slippery Rock rattled off six straight points to pull ahead of Edinboro 15-9 only for the Fighting Scots to slowly climb back into the game, eventually tying the score at 18-18. From there, SRU and Boro went traded points until The Rock finished off the set, 25-22, with three straight points including a set-winning block by Chevalier and Berger.

Edinboro answered back by using an 8-1 run with the score tied at five in the third set to open a seven-point advantage Slippery Rock was unable to recover from en route to the 25-19 go-ahead victory.

The fourth set saw the two evenly matched teams play to a 12-12 tie before Wheeler spurred on a 3-0 Rock run with two kills that gave Slippery a 15-12 lead and forced an Edinboro timeout.

The break in action did little to suppress The Rock's momentum as SRU promptly took two more points coming out of the timeout by way of a Koeller kill and a Wheeler/Berger block which resulted in yet another Fighting Scot timeout. Much like the first Edinboro timeout, Slippery Rock again captured two straight points once play resumed to push its lead out to 19-12.

Slippery Rock was content to trade points with Edinboro for the remainder of the set with SRU eventually closing out a 25-21 win to force a fifth and final set.

SRU jumped out to a 6-4 lead in the final set, but Edinboro responded by scoring four straight points as the team's switched sides with the Fighting Scots holding a two-point edge they would never relinquish for the eventual 15-12 match-clinching win.

Edinboro was led by Natalie Pallone (13 kills) and Erica Sharp (seven blocks). For the match, the Fighting Scots held advantages over SRU in attack percentage (.149-.126), aces (7-3) and total blocks (12-11).

Slippery Rock continues its four-match PSAC West road trip 6 p.m. Sept. 23 at Clarion.
