GLENVILLE, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University softball team picked up its first win of the season while splitting a doubleheader at Glenville State College Saturday.

SRU took the opener from the Pioneers with a 6-0 shutout victory in game one before falling 5-2 in game two on a walk-off grand slam. Slippery Rock's record moves to 1-5 while the Pioneers exit Saturday at 4-3.

Arielle Brown, Mackenzie Freeman and Cami Fisk paced SRU's offense over two games. Brown ended the day going a combined 3-for-8 over the doubleheader with three runs scored and one stolen base. Freeman tallied two hits in five at bats with one home run and three RBI. Fisk went 3-for-4 with two doubles.

GAME ONE: SRU 6 - GSC 0
Slippery Rock parlayed six runs on 11 hits with a complete-game shutout by Kelsi Anderson (1-2) to secure a 6-0 game one victory.

Anderson pitched one of the best games of her collegiate career Saturday, ending game one by striking out nine batters including the first four that she faced, and allowing seven hits and just two walks. The shutout by Anderson was the third of her career while her nine strikeouts tied her career-high.

The Rock's offensive efforts were spearheaded by the trio of Fisk, Freeman and Regan Hozak. Fisk went a team-best 2-for-3, hitting one double and scoring one run while Freeman went 1-for-2 with a two-run homer. Hozak also ended game one batting 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Rounding out SRU's leaders was Brown who recorded one hit and scored two runs and Erin Gardner who tallied Slippery Rock's remaining hit.

With Anderson in firm control in the circle, Slippery Rock's bats quickly put the opener away with four runs in the opening three innings highlighted by Hozak's two-run single in the second inning. SRU would go on to add two insurance scores in the seventh en route to the win.

Holly Brehm (2-1) took the loss after allowing six runs, on six hits in seven innings of work.

GAME TWO: GSC 5 – SRU 2 (8 Innings)
Chloe Sharman (0-2) and Madison Thimmes (1-0) went toe-to-toe in a great pitchers' duel in which Slippery Rock came up just short in an eventual 5-2 eight-inning win by Glenville State in game two.

Neither Sharman or Thimmes allowed runs over the opening seven frames to prompt extra innings.

Slippery Rock struck first when via an RBI-groundout by Julia Nutter that brought home Gardner for the game's first run. SRU went on to score its second run on a single by Freeman which plated Brown, who singled and stole a base earlier in the inning. Through 7.5 innings, Slippery Rock led 2-0.

However, the hopes of a sweep over the Pioneers were dashed as GSC first pulled within one run courtesy of a run-scoring single from Monica Rodelo followed four batters later by Kaelyn Stenger who hit a walk-off grand slam to seal the 5-2 victory.

Sharman took the loss after allowing five runs, four being earned, on five hits while striking out three batters and walking two.

SRU was led on offense by Brown who hit 2-for-4 while scoring one run and stealing one base. Freeman tallied one hit and one RBI while Nutter drove in a run as well.

Slippery Rock and the Pioneers close out the weekend series with two more games Sunday. First pitch at Glenville State is scheduled for 1 p.m.
