Â
THE PSAC TOURNAMENT RACE
The top six teams in the PSAC West standings at the end of the year earn berths into the PSAC Tournament. With two weeks remaining in the regular season the Western Division postseason puzzle is slowly starting to take shape.
Â
Indiana (16-2) and Pitt-Johnstown (15-3) have already secured two of the six spots with Mercyhurst (14-4) and Cal U (15-5) on pace to clinch two more bids this week, realistically leaving three teams - Gannon, Slippery Rock and Edinboro - fighting for the final two berths.
Â
Gannon (9-8) opens the week clinging to a slim half-game lead over The Rock (8-8) for fifth place while SRU holds a three-game edge over Edinboro for the all-important sixth spot in the league standings.
Â
A win Monday by The Rock against Clarion combined with a Gannon victory over Edinboro would all but eliminate the Fighting Scots from postseason contention and move SRU another step closer to clinching its 11th PSAC Tournament berth in the last 13 years.
Â
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
Slippery Rock currently has four players that average at least 10 points per game in
Frankie Hughes (16.3),
Tyler Frederick (14.0),
Jonathan McFall (14.0) and
Amante Britt (12.6).
Â
If The Rock's current leading scorer quartet continues to at their current averages through the remainder of the season it would mark the first time since the 2012-13 season in which SRU had four players finish the year in double figures (Devin Taylor-14.5, Darious Clark-12.4, Gerald Brooks-12.0, Tabari Perry-10.3).
Â
A GREAT TEAM WIN
The Seton Hill game saw nine different Rock players score at least two points. The contest marked the third time this season against a Division II opponent that SRU had nine players score points.
Â
WIRE-TO-WIRE WINS
Slippery Rock led for over 39 minutes and never trailed in the Seton Hill game, marking the third time this season that SRU led for the entirety of a game.
Â
ROCK HOLDS OPPONENT UNDER 70 FOR FIFTH TIME
The Seton Hill game also marked the fifth time this year that this season's offense-oriented team held an opponent under 70 points. Previously, SRU also limited Mansfield (67), Penn State Greater Allegheny (64), Seton Hill (61) and Penn State Fayette (52) to fewer than 70 points. As one would expect, Slippery Rock is 5-0 in those games.
Â
ROCK TRENDS
•
Tyler Frederick averages a double-double of 13.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game in Rock wins this season.
Â
•
Lashon Lindsey has 10 blocks in his last eight games.
Â
• Since going 0-for-9 from 3-point range vs. Cal U,
Frankie Hughes has rebounded to hit 38.1 percent (24-of-63) of his 3's over the last six games. Hughes is also scoring 18.7 ppg over the run including back-to-back 24-point showings.
•
Jonathan McFall has made 15 of his last 26 two-point field goal attempts (.577) and has reached double figures in six of seven games.
Â
•
Bobby Clifford scored eight points vs. Seton Hill, his highest point total in the last six games.
Â
• Forwards
Lashon Lindsey and
Tyler Frederick have combined to shoot 45.2 percent (19-of-42) from 3-point range over the last eight games.
Â
• In its 12 wins, Slippery Rock averages 41.5 rebounds per game, up from 36.1 rpg in its 10 losses.
Â
• SRU is shooting 48.4 percent from the field (62-of-128) in its last two games.
Â
BENCH MAGIC
Ushered on by
Frankie Hughes' 24 points, Slippery Rock closed out the Seton Hill contest with 34 bench points, its highest total against a Division II team this year.
Lashon Lindsey (4),
Earl Baker Jr. (4) and
Zaire Rogers (2) also came off the bench to score against the Griffins.
Â
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Few teams in the Atlantic Region dominate at home like SRU does at Morrow Field House. Since 2008-09, Slippery Rock is an outstanding 139-44 (.760) at home. Included in the record is a solid 8-5 mark in home games this season. A victory over Clarion would ensure SRU of a 13th consecutive season with a winning record in home games.
Â
THE ROCK CONTINUES TO BE ELITE AT OFFENSIVE REBOUNDING
Slippery Rock begins the week ranked fifth in the nation in offensive rebounding at 14.45 per game. SRU's offensive rebounding efforts are led by
Tyler Frederick (4.0),
Jonathan McFall (2.6)
Lashon Lindsey (1.7),
Bobby Clifford (1.1) and
Frankie Hughes (1.1).
Â
FREDERICK GRABBING OFFENSIVE BOARDS AT HISTORIC RATE
Tyler Frederick has averaged a PSAC-high 4.0 offensive rebounds per game through The Rock's first 22 games. Over the last 18 years only nine SRU athletes have averaged over 3.0 offensive rebounds per game for a season and just one, Micah Till in 2017-18, has averaged at least 4.0 orpg.
Â
HUGHES CHASING HISTORY
Frankie Hughes hit five 3-pointers against Seton Hill to give him 67 on the year. Hughes, the PSAC's leader in 3-pointers per game (3.0), is on pace to finish the year with 85 made 3-pointers which would rank second in program history behind only current record holder Mark Metzka who hit 87 3-pointers in 1994-95.
Â
ROCK HITTING 3'S AT A HISTORIC RATE
Slippery Rock enters the Clarion game having averaged 8.6 made 3-pointers per game this season. Over The Rock's program history, only three teams have finished a season averaging over eight made 3-pointers in a season - 1994-95 (9.2), 2009-10 (9.1), 2018-19 (8.7).Â

Â
BRITT ON CUSP OF JOINING ELITE COMPANY
Amante Britt is on the cusp of doing something few players in program history have ever accomplished. With his next three steals Britt will have totaled over 500 points, 200 assists and 100 steals in a career. To date, only five players have ever accomplished that feat at The Rock.
Â
IT'S A MAKE-OR-MISS GAME
In its 12 wins this season Slippery Rock shoots 47.8 percent (391-of-818) from the field overall compared to just 41.8 percent (284-of-679) in its 10 losses. Opponents shoot 51.8 percent (81-of-187) when beating The Rock and only 42.5 percent (307-of-722) when losing to SRU.
Â
TAKING ADVANTAGE OF MISTAKES
Slippery Rock, which has forced opponents into 14.6 turnovers per game this season, has done a great job of converting its opponent miscues into points. Through 18 games, SRU has averaged 17.7 points off turnovers per game.
Â
If The Rock are able to maintain that average through the rest of the season it would rank second behind the program single-season record of 17.8 points off of turnovers per game set by the 2018-19 team. SRU began tracking points off turnover as a statistic in 2014-15.
Â
VALUING POSSESSION
To date, the 2021-22 Slippery Rock men's basketball team has taken care of the basketball at a rate not seen at SRU in years, if ever. Through 22 games, Slippery Rock is committing just 11.4 turnovers per game, which would be a single-season program record at SRU were the season to end today (turnovers were not tracked prior to the 1989-90 season).
Â
CLOSE LOSSES
Nine of Slippery Rock's 10 losses this season have come by nine points or less including seven defeats by no more than seven points. Overall, SRU's average margin of defeat is 6.4 points.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
• Clarion features one of the top scoring guards in the PSAC in Gerald Jarmon. In 23 games this season, Jarmon, the PSAC's third-leading scorer, has averaged 20.5 points per game. Jarmon went off for 35 points in the Golden Eagles' victory over The Rock earlier in the year. Jarmon is one of 10 PSAC athletes to average at least two made 3's per game.
Â
• Connor Ferrell (15.6) and Lawrence Lemon (12.0) also average at least 12 ppg to go with a combined 11.2 rebounds a night.
Â
• Clarion enjoyed a great shooting night vs. SRU in the first meeting of the season, making 48.3 percent (29-of-60) of its field goals overall, 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from 3-point range and 85 percent (17-of-20) at the foul line.
Â
• The Golden Eagles have lost four straight games by an average of 16.5 points since their win over The Rock. Clarion has won just one true road game this season (101-90 at Bloomsburg).
Â
