BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team produced a great all-around performance on day one of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championships Saturday at the Burt Reese Tennis Center on the campus of Bloomsburg University.
 
Gabriela del Val del Toro, Nuria Martin Lopez and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez all advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles bracket while del Val del Toro and Martin Lopez teamed up to move on to the semifinals of the doubles tournament.
 
del Val del Toro, the third seed in the singles tournament, opened her championship run by besting Rafaella de Almeida of Edinboro 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round followed by a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Bloomsburg's Nicole Ikovic in the second round.
 
Also a seeded entry for The Rock, Gonzalez Sanchez earned a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win over Clarion's Alexis Strouse before staying perfect on the day courtesy of a 6-3, 6-2 victory against West Chester's Elaina Lee.
 
Rounding out SRU's singles entries was Martin Lopez who came away with a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Maria Ojeda of California in the first round before downing Lock Haven's Madison Reeves 6-0, 6-1.
 
Sunday's quarterfinal round in the singles tournament will see Martin Lopez go against fourth-seeded Joanna Stralka of Indiana (Pa.). Meanwhile, SRU is assured of having at least one athlete reach the semifinals regardless of the Martin Lopez – Stralka outcome as Gonzalez Sanchez and del Val del Toro will face one another.
 
In doubles action, del Val del Toro and Martin Lopez, the third seeded team in the tournament, joined forces to beat East Stroudsburg's team of Sam Passmore and Montana Catalan in the opening round, 8-0. While a closer a score, SRU's top doubles team was then able to play its way out of the quarterfinals by way of an 8-5 win against Maria Ojeda and Noelle Htwar of Millersville.
 
Gonzalez Sanchez and Tina Slovak were unable to make it a perfect day for The Rock as the duo played top-seeded Natalie Kmoskova and Karolin Kirchtag tough before ultimately falling, 8-3.
 
Martin Lopez and del Val del Toro will now face Indiana's Katy Graydon and Lydia Vlachou in the semifinals of the doubles bracket.
 
Competition is scheduled to resume Saturday with the semifinals of the doubles bracket at 9 a.m. followed by the quarterfinals and semifinals of the singles tournament at 10:45 a.m. and 2 p.m.
