Rock suffers 3-1 loss to Seton Hill

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team suffered a 3-1 PSAC West loss to Seton Hill Saturday at James Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division loss to Seton Hill University Saturday at James Egli Field.

With the loss The Rock falls to 4-6-1 overall and 2-3 in the division while the Griffins improve to 5-7-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference.

The victory allows Seton Hill to maintain possession of third place in the PSAC West standings, now four points ahead of SRU, with six conference games remaining for The Rock this year. The top three teams in the PSAC West and East standings at the end of the year qualify for the conference tournament.

Arturo Pla Hernandis led SRU's attack in his second straight game, scoring The Rock's lone goal while Topher Garcia dished out his first career assist.

Pla Hernandis landed three of five shots on goal while Garcia, Luke Gildea, Ramses Minaya and Alex Plimmer all placed one shot on target.

Pla Hernandis' goal was the sixth of the season marking his new career-high.

Hossam Aly made four saves over 90 minutes of action.

The first half was dominated by the Griffins as their offensive surge began just eight minutes into the contest when Moritz Stuehn beat the SRU backline and netted a goal giving SHU an early 1-0 lead.

Just eight minutes later, Fletcher Amos received a cross pass from Linden Dupont that found the back of the net, extending the Griffins lead to 2-0 on just their fourth shot of the contest.

Seton Hill tacked on an insurance goal before the halftime break on a nearly 20-yard shot that snuck over Aly to give SHU a 3-0 advantage at the half.

Coming out of the break, Slippery Rock made a few substitutions including Garcia, who just seven minutes after entering the game, gave SRU a much-needed momentum shift by sending a beautiful pass to the foot of Pla Hernandis to put The Rock on the scoreboard.

SRU continued its attempt at a comeback, controlling the offensive possession over the final 20 minutes of play and outshooting SHU 5-2, including three shots on target. However, The Rock were unable to bridge the gap ending the contest in a 3-1 Griffins victory.

For the game, Slippery Rock held advantages in total shots (14-13) and corners (5-2) while Seton Hill led in shots on goal (8-7).

Slippery Rock begins a two-game road trip and starts the second leg of its round robin conference schedule with a contest at Gannon University 6 p.m. Oct 12.
