ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division loss on the road at Gannon University Wednesday.
The loss moves Slippery Rock's overall record to 4-7-1 and conference mark to 2-4 while the Golden Knights improve to 10-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the PSAC West.
Gannon scored what would be the game-winning goal with seven minutes remaining in the opening half when Sergio Del Castillo, the Division II leader in scoring, received a cross pass from Joe Knox and placed a shot past goalkeeper
Hossam Aly.
Slippery Rock was unable to tally the equalizer following the Golden Knights goal as the Gannon defense held The Rock to just three total shots while holding on for the tight one-goal victory.
The Rock's three shots of the night were compiled by
Arturo Pla Hernandis,
Alex Plimmer and
Joe Skillicorn. Plimmer and Skillicorn landed their shots high of the goal while Pla Hernadis' strike was blocked by the Gannon backline.
Slippery Rock's best chance at an equalizer came at 75:51 when
Ramses Minaya played a solid pass to Skillicorn, who fired a shot just wide of the goal.
Despite the loss, the SRU defense and Aly posted a strong performance making six saves, facing 19 shots and allowing just one goal over 90 minutes of action.
As a team, Gannon held advantages of The Rock in total shots (19-3), shots on goal (7-0) and corners (11-3).
Slippery Rock continues its travels with a conference match at Pitt-Johnstown 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Earlier this season SRU defeated the Mountain Cats 4-1 at James Egli Field.
