SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team fell, 3-1 against Roberts Wesleyan University Tuesday at James Egli Field.
With the non-conference loss, The Rock's overall record moves to 4-5-1 overall and remains 2-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division while RWU improves to 6-4-2 overall and stays 2-1-2 in the East Coast Conference.
Slippery Rock's scoring was produced by Arturo Pla Hernandis who netted his fifth goal of the year and Alex Plimmer with his second assist of the season.
Plimmer ended the contest with three shots on goal, and Pla Hernandis two, while Samuel Hillman and Topher Garcia each placed one shot on target.
Hossam Aly made seven saves for The Rock over 80:04 while Adam Davies saw just under 10 minutes of action in his first collegiate contest for SRU allowing no goals and not having to face a shot.
The Rock were able to open the game's scoring just 13 minutes into the first half when Pla Hernandis headed home a cross pass from Plimmer giving Slippery Rock a 1-0 advantage.
The Roberts Wesleyan attack quickly took over taking seven shots, three of which were on target, over the next 22 minutes. RWU earned its first goal at 37:22 when an errant Rock attempt to clear a free kick by the Redhawks was headed in for an own goal, evening the score 1-1 at the half.
Coming out of the break, RWU's offense got off to a quick start with Justin Robertson netting a goal just three minutes into the second half, extending the Roberts Wesleyan lead to 2-1.
Slippery Rock continued its attempt at an equalizer as The Rock and Redhawks traded shots over the next 22 minutes.
However, Tamas Nagy went on to add an insurance goal for Roberts Wesleyan with 18 minutes remining and the Redhawk defense led by goalkeeper Jared Gibbons held off SRU's final four shots of the game en route to a 3-1 RWU victory.
As a team, Roberts Wesleyan held advantages over SRU in total shots (16-10), shots on goal (10-7) and corners (6-2).
Slippery Rock returns to conference competition when it hosts Seton Hill University 12 p.m. Saturday at James Egli Field.
