SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team compiled its largest scoring output of the season in a 5-0 victory over California (Pa.) Wednesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The win improves The Rock's overall record to 5-7-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. With the loss, the Vulcans move to 3-9-1 overall and 1-6 in the conference.

Four different players accounted for SRU's five goals.
Arturo Pla Hernandis led the charge with two goals himself while
Ramses Minaya,
Shaun Spencer and
Alex Plimmer all tallied a score apiece. Minaya,
Harry Griffin and
Joe Skillicorn each finished the match with an assist.

Pla Hernandis extended his goal total to eight on the year while becoming the first Rock men's soccer player to tally two goals in one game this season. Spencer netted his fourth goal of the year while Minaya landed his second.

In his first career start for The Rock, goalkeeper
Adam Davies earned the shutout victory after making five saves over 90 minutes.

Pla Hernandis started Slippery Rocks offensive surge just 9:28 into the first half when he landed a shot from 25 yards away, over Vulcan goalkeeper AJ Visco for an early one-goal lead.

Davies and the Slippery Rock defense settled in for the remainder of the first half, successfully stopping seven Cal shots, two of which were on goal, preserving the 1-0 Rock lead into halftime.

Just out the break at 47:26, Minaya found the back of the net from 30 yards out on an assist from Skillicorn. Spencer continued SRU's offensive attack when he put away a ball dished to him by Minaya, to extend the Rock lead to 3-0 in the 72nd minute.

Pla Hernandis joined back into the scoring efforts at 74:19 when he collected a long through ball from Griffin and laid it past Visco once more giving SRU a 4-0 edge.

At 86:43, Slippery Rock would be awarded a penalty kick that Plimmer sent just out of reach of Visco, securing the 5-0 Rock victory.

Over 90 minutes, Slippery Rock held advantages over California in total shots (13-9) and shots on goal (7-5) while the Vulcans led in corners (4-1).

Slippery Rock steps out of conference competition for a final time when it travels to Amherst, New York to face Daemen College 12 p.m. Saturday.
