SALEM, W. Va. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team earned an impressive 3-0 non-conference victory Tuesday at Salem University.
Â
SRU cruised to 25-15 and 25-8 wins over the first two sets before closing out the sweep with a 25-21 victory in the third. With the win, Slippery Rock improves its record to 9-14 overall while the Tigers drop to 0-27.
Â
Slippery Rock controlled all facets of Tuesday's match as The Rock finished with team advantages over the Tigers in kills (40-24), attack percentage (.243-.070), aces (4-1) and digs (49-44) while both teams concluded the contest with four blocks. Â
Â
Abigail Koeller led a well-rounded Slippery Rock attack with a match-high eight kills. The trio of
Erica Selfridge,
Callie Chevalier and
Mary Berger totaled five kills each while
Lauren VonderHaar and
Alayna Chizmar came off the bench to produce four kills apiece.
Â
Setters
Jaeden Yost and
Peytan Gullickson guided the offense with 12 assists each.
Â
Slippery Rock's four aces came off serves from Selfridge,
Paige Weeder,
Kate Lachendro and
Maria Lucas, who has now served at least one ace in 10 straight matches. An ace by Lucas in The Rock's next match would move her into a tie with Lauren Rojek (2013) for the longest consecutive ace streak by a SRU volleyball player over the last 14 seasons. Â
Â
Defensively, Berger registered two blocks with Selfridge and
Abigail Nigon each totaling one solo block as well while Chevalier made a match-best 10 digs.
Â
The opening two sets were never in doubt as Slippery Rock first jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the opener on the way to its eventual 25-15 win before taking 17 of the first 20 points in the second set en route to the 25-8 win.
Â
Koeller had six kills in the first set while Berger had three kills and two blocks in the second set.
Â
The third set was a much closer contest, but SRU was able to close out the sweep with a 12-7 match-deciding run as Slippery Rock took advantage of nine Salem errors (four attack, three setting, two service) down the stretch for a 25-21 triumph.
Â
Makhia Hinton had six kills in the loss for Salem.
Â
Slippery Rock returns home for a pair of matches at Morrow Field House 7 p.m. Friday against Pitt-Johnstown and 2 p.m. Saturday versus Clarion.
