Rock cruises to 2-0 win at Fairmont State

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team defeated Fairmont State on the road, 2-0, Sunday afternoon. Faith Diffenbacher netted her first career goal while Rachel Edge registered her second goal of the season.

FAIRMONT, W. Va. - The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team defeated Fairmont State University on the road, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field in Fairmont, West Virginia.
 
Slippery Rock improves to 1-0-1 on the season following the victory while Fairmont falls to 0-1-0 overall.
 
The Rock's win featured Faith Diffenbacher netting her first career goal and Rachel Edge registering her second goal of the season on an assist from Kayla Swope.
 
Edge paced The Rock's offensive attack with five shots, three of which were on goal. Sydney Patrick (three) and Ashley Rea (two) also tallied multi-shot games with Diffenbacher, Swope, Georgia Nagucki and Kylee Kosek all adding one shot apiece.
 
Emma Yoder made seven saves on the way to her 12th career shutout and 21st collegiate win.
 
Slippery Rock was able to score a goal in both halves of regulation while also successfully holding the Falcons offense in order to secure the shutout victory marking the 41st shutout The Rock has registered since Jessica Giegucz became head coach.
 
With 9:41 left in the first half, Diffenbacher, a freshman, scored the first goal of the game off of a corner kick, giving SRU a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
 
In the 76th minute, the familiar sequence of Swope to Edge recorded the game-sealing goal for The Rock. With this goal, Edge is now tied for 18th in program history for goals scored with 18.
 
Sunday's game marked Giegucz' 100th game at SRU, making her the 25th women's soccer coach to have coached at least 100 games at a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference school in conference history.
 
Slippery Rock will next host its first PSAC West match of the season against Clarion University 1 p.m. Wednesday at Egli Field.

GOAL: ROCK 1, FSU 0: Diffenbacher scored off Swope assist on corner kick.
GOAL: ROCK 2, FSU 0: Edge goal on Swope assist.
