Rock downs IUP, 1-0

Rachel Edge scored a goal in the 85th minute to help the Slippery Rock women’s soccer team secure a 1-0 PSAC West victory over Indiana (Pa.) Wednesday.

INDIANA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division victory on the road at Indiana University (Pa.) Wednesday.

With the win, Slippery Rock improves its record to 5-1-1 overall this season and 4-1-0 in PSAC West matches while IUP falls to 2-2-1 overall and 1-2-2 in conference competition. The victory also extends SRU's road record in 2021 to a perfect 3-0-0.

Rachel Edge, the Reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Week, scored the game-winning goal for The Rock when she beat IUP goalkeeper Samantha Gildner for a score in the 85th minute courtesy of a Jordyn Minda assist.

Edge's goal was her PSAC-leading seventh of the year. Edge, who also has three assists this season, now leads the conference in both goals and total points (17). Wednesday's goal gives Edge 64 career points (23 goals / 18 assists), which is tied for the ninth highest total in program history along with Beth Kimball (1995-98) and Jen Canucci (1994-97).

The assist was Minda's first of the season. Adding to The Rock's offensive attack in addition to Mind and Edge, who placed four of her five shots on goal, were Kayla Swope and Reagan Reeves with one shot on goal each. Katy Ericson, Sydney Patrick and Julia Mascaro also posted off-target shot attempts as well.

As has been the case all year, The Rock's defense was once again stellar as SRU limited the Crimson Hawks to just three total shots. Only one of the attempts was on target, a shot by Cloe Thoericht in the 25th minute that was stopped by Slippery Rock's Emma Yoder.

SRU has now held opponents to one goal or less in six of its seven games this season. The shutout was the 14th of Yoder's career.

The Rock were the aggressors for the entirety of Wednesday's game as SRU posted eight shots in the first half and five more over the majority of the second half, but to their credit IUP maintained the scoreless tie heading into the final stages of the contest thanks in no small part to six saves by Gildner.

However, Edge picked up the eventual game-winner at 84:38 when she capitalized on Minda's pass en route to scoring her fifth career game-winning goal.

For the game, Slippery Rock held advantages over IUP in total shots (14-3), shots on goal (7-1) and corner kicks (8-1).

SRU will look to earn its sixth win in the last seven games 2 p.m. Saturday at California University (Pa.). Slippery Rock has not lost to the Vulcans since the 2014 season.
