SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University javelin thrower
Danielle Collier unleashed the best throw in the nation this season on her first throw in an SRU uniform to highlight a strong performance by The Rock women's track and field team at the Dave Labor Invitational Saturday at the William Lennox Track. Â
Â
Slippery Rock would finish the day with five NCAA provisional marks, five event wins and 21 top five finishes at its first home meet since the spring of 2019.
Â
The highlight of the day belonged to the senior transfer from Miami University (Ohio), who sat out The Rock's season opener last week and made her SRU debut Saturday. Collier, a former Division I All-American, graduated from Miami and enrolled in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at SRU with one season of eligibility remaining, after the pandemic canceled her senior season in 2020.
Â
She wasted no time in making her presence felt at the Division II level when she uncorked a throw of 49.29 meters into a headwind on her very first throw of the competition. That mark is more than a full meter better than any other Division II thrower had recorded entering Saturday (47.94m was the No. 1 mark) and is just shy of both the NCAA automatic qualifying mark (49.63m) and the SRU record (49.98m), which has stood since 2004.
Â
Collier led a 1-2-3 sweep by Slippery Rock in the javelin with
Trinity Clark and
Skylar Sherry placing second and third, both with their own NCAA provisional marks. Clark improved her season-best to 44.69 meters, which moves her up to No. 13 on the Division II national list. Sherry landed a throw of 42.47 meters, just shy of her season-best set last weekend.
Â
The javelin throwers stole the limelight away from
Reagan Hess, who earlier in the day popped a lifetime best of her own on the way to winning the long jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 5.95 meters. That mark vaults Hess all the way up to No. 5 on the national list entering Saturday's competitions. Hess was joined in earning a top three finish in the long jump by
Samantha Gilbert, who placed third with a leap of 5.39 meters.
Â
Slippery Rock would add a fifth NCAA mark and another victory when
Kendall Grossman cleared a collegiate best of 3.68 meters to win the pole vault.
Heidi Bednarz and
Olivia Sentle tied for second at 3.08 meters to give The Rock a 1-2-3 sweep in that event as well.
Â
Cecily Greggs nearly gave SRU a sixth NCAA provisional mark when she won the high jump with a clearance of 1.64 meters, just shy of the NCAA mark of 1.68 meters.
Katie Bonczyk was fourth at 1.54 meters.
Ashanti Richardson rounded out the top efforts in the jumps with a fifth place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 10.66 meters.
Â
The javelin throwers' performances were just three of nine total top five marks recorded by The Rock's throwers Saturday.
Jena Reinheimer had another outstanding all-around day and picked up the win in the hammer with a throw of 48.69 meters to go along with a second place finish in the discus with a throw of 42.77 meters.
Rachel Hutchinson was second in the hammer at 47.99 meters and
Tiffany Jolayemi was fifth at 43.20 meters.
Sarah Corrie led the way in the shot put with a third place finish and a mark of 12.08 meters, while
Kamryn Snyder was fourth at 11.91 meters.
Â
The Rock picked up five top five showings on the track, led by a second place finish in the 5,000-meter run from
Lexie Firment in 19:41.73.
Thai-Lin Pierce was fourth in the 100-meter dash in 12.67 seconds, topping Gilbert in fifth in 12.77 seconds. Pierce was also fourth in the 200-meter dash in 27.17 seconds. Bonczyk rounded out the top five placings on the day with a fifth place showing in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.67 seconds. Â
Â
Slippery Rock will travel to Indiana (Pa.) to compete next Sunday before returning home for each of the following two weeks with home meets scheduled for April 15-16 and April 22.
