GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team was swept in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader at Seton Hill University Wednesday.
SHU (5-1, 5-1 PSAC West) opened the twin bill with a 3-2 victory over The Rock (1-5, 1-5 PSAC West) before completing the sweep with a 6-2 win in game two.
Slippery Rock was led on the day by outfielder
Anna Villies, who had two hits and two RBI over the doubleheader.
Chloe Sharman (0-0) turned in a solid day in the circle allowing just one run on one hit while striking out two over 3.1 innings in two relief appearances.
Game One: Seton Hill 3, Slippery Rock 2
Sharman and
Claire Zimmerman (0-3) combined to hold the Griffins to just three runs, but The Rock bats were stymied by SHU starting pitcher Lauren Dellet (3-0) who allowed just two runs while striking out 10 in a complete game effort as part of Seton Hill's 3-2 win.
Seton Hill opened the scoring in the first on an RBI double by Alexis Vargas followed by an RBI single off the bat of Morgan Toal one batter later to give the Griffins the early 2-0 advantage.
Slippery Rock struck back with two runs of its own in the frame when a fielding error by Seton Hill allowed
Alexa Guglielmino and
Regan Hozak to score. However, the Griffins regained the lead in the home half of the frame on a Nina Grandey RBI-single giving SHU an advantage it wouldn't relinquish as Dellet retired 12 of the next 16 Rock batters to secure the 3-2 win.
Zimmerman, the SRU game one starting pitcher, allowed three runs on seven hits before giving way to Sharman who allowed just one hit in her 2.1 innings of relief. Guglielmino, Villies, Zimmerman,
Julianna Hutchinson and
Erin Gardner had one hit apiece in the opener with Guglielmino also scoring one run.
In addition to the complete-game effort by Dellet, the Griffin offense was led by Toal who went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
Game Two: Seton Hill 6, Slippery Rock 2
Seton Hill parlayed a five-run sixth inning with a complete-game, two-run effort from Lauren Bertig (1-1) to secure a 6-2 victory in game two.
Villies led the SRU effort with a two-RBI single in addition to a 2-for-3 showing by catcher
Leah Vith. SRU starting pitcher
Kelsi Anderson (1-2) allowed five runs, four being earned, on five hits before being relieved in the sixth inning by Sharman who allowed an earned run in her one inning of work.
The Griffin offense was paced by Jenna Osikowicz who went 3-for-3 with a triple while Grandey drove in two RBI in support of Bertig who allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings.
Already leading 1-0 in the sixth inning, Seton Hill broke the game open by scoring five runs on three hits one error and three wild pitches to go up 6-0. A Villies RBI-single cut The Rock deficit to 6-2 in the seventh, but SRU was unable to complete the comeback as Seton Hill hung on for the four-run victory.
