SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team dropped both games of its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division doubleheader against Seton Hill University Saturday at the SRU Softball Complex.
The Griffins (7-1, 4-0 PSAC West) took game one, 6-0, before completing the sweep with a 4-0 game two victory.
The Rock (1-7, 1-7 PSAC West) was led on the day by outfielder
Anna Villies who had three hits including a double while infielders
Erin Gardner and
Julianna Hutchinson each added a hit in game two. Pitcher
Chloe Sharman (0-0) turned in a pair of solid performances in relief, allowing just two hits over 2.2 total innings of work.
Game One: Seton Hill 6, Slippery Rock 0
Villies recorded the lone Slippery Rock hit in game one, a first inning double, before the SRU offense was shut down by Griffin starting pitcher Lauren Dellet (4-0) who struck out four in a complete-game effort as part of SHU's 6-0 win.
Rock starting pitcher
Kelsi Anderson (1-3) took the loss after allowing six runs, five being earned, in addition to recording four strikeouts over 5.2 innings before giving way to Sharman who allowed one hit in 1.1 innings of work.
The Seton Hill offense was led in game one by Jenna Osikowicz who had a two-RBI single while Nichole McClendon added a 2-for-4 day at the plate, scoring twice.
The Griffins scored three runs over the third and fourth innings followed by a three-run sixth highlighted by a pair of RBI-singles by Osikowicz and Samantha Estupinian that gave SHU a lead it wouldn't relinquish the six-run victory.
Game Two: Seton Hill 4, Slippery Rock 0
Claire Zimmerman kept The Rock in game two with a great effort in the circle, but a late Seton Hill surge proved too much for SRU to overcome in a 4-0 defeat.
Zimmerman (0-4) opened the contest by throwing four shutout innings before eventually ending the afternoon with four runs allowed, three being earned, on six hits over 5.2 innings. She was relieved by Sharman who yielded no runs and just one hit in 1.1 innings.
The Slippery Rock offense tallied four hits in game two, highlighted by a 2-for-3 showing from Villies in addition to Gardner and Hutchinson adding one hit each.
Dellet paced the SHU offense going 2-for-3 with an RBI-triple in addition to scoring a run. Lauren Hartman (2-0) struck out four while walking two in the second complete-game effort of the day in the circle for the Griffins.
Already leading by a run, Seton Hill scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-0 lead on the back of Dellet's RBI-triple followed by a run-scoring single by Nina Grandey. The four-run advantage would be enough support for Hartman who retired six of the last seven Rock batters to cement Seton Hill's 4-0 win.
