Rock rallies by Ursuline 68-64 in home opener

Jamiyah Johnson scored 26 points and grabbed 19 rebounds and Slippery Rock outscored Ursuline 23-12 in the fourth quarter to complete a 68-64 comeback win in The Rock's home opener Wednesday night.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team rallied from a 15-point deficit to earn a 68-64 comeback victory over Ursuline College Wednesday evening in The Rock's non-conference home opener from Morrow Field House.
 
Slippery Rock outscored Ursuline 23-12 in the final quarter to cap a 25-12 run that started with just under a minute to play in the third quarter. The Rock improves to 2-1 on the year, while the Arrows slip to 2-1 after opening their season with a pair of wins.
 
Ursuline led 42-30 at halftime after outscoring SRU 24-14 in the second period and maintained a lead throughout the entire third quarter.
 
Jamiyah Johnson started the comeback rally for SRU with a layup with 46 seconds left in the third quarter that cut the deficit to 52-45 heading to the final period.
 
SRU chipped away at the margin until Daeja Quick hit a driving layup with 5:29 to play that gave The Rock their first lead since the early stages of the game. Johnson poured in another layup with 4:32 to play that capped a 19-7 run and gave The Rock a 62-59 lead.
 
Ursuline countered with a 3-pointer from Bekah Green that tied the game at 62-62 with 3:17 to play, but that would prove to be the Arrows' final field goal of the night.
 
After the two teams traded a pair of free throws to make it 64-64 with 1:46 to play, Slippery Rock took the lead for good with another layup from Johnson after she grabbed an offensive rebound with 1:16 to play.
 
Ursuline would miss three 2-point field goal attempts and one 3-pointer down the stretch and Johnson sealed the win with two free throws.
 
Johnson was a dominant force for The Rock and put together one of the best performances by an SRU women's basketball player in more than five seasons. She finished with her third straight double-double with 26 points and 19 rebounds on 11-of-12 shooting from the field and 4-for-4 shooting from the free throw line. The 19 boards rank seventh on the SRU single-game ledger and her performance was the first double-double of more than 20 points and 15 rebounds by an SRU player since D'Asia Chambers went for 24 points and 15 rebounds against Pitt-Johnstown on Jan. 31, 2015.
 
Quick had a stellar showing herself and finished with 18 points and five assists while playing the full 40 minutes. Kennedy Middleton added 12 points, three rebounds and four steals. Deleah Gibson scored eight points and handed out three assists, Isabellah Middleton scored four points and Anyah Curd handed out five assists to cap the top performers.
 
Slippery Rock finished the game shooting 47.5 percent from the field (28-of-59), 20.0 percent from 3-point (4-of-20) and 88.9 percent from the free throw line (8-of-9). The Rock posted a 35-30 edge in rebounds and scored 13 second-chance points on 10 offensive boards.
 
Ursuline shot 40.7 percent from the field (24-of-59), 40.9 percent from 3-point (9-of-22) and 100 percent from the free throw line (7-of-7). Michaela Cloonan led the Arrows with 23 points and nine rebounds. Bekah Green chipped in 13 points and Madison Cloonan scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
 
Slippery Rock will travel to Canton, Ohio to play at Malone University in a non-conference game Saturday at 1 p.m.
