INSTITUTE, W. VA. - The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team ended it's time at the Earl Lloyd Classic with an 84-71 loss to host West Virginia State University Sunday.
Slippery Rock ends the weekend 1-1 overall to open the season while the Yellow Jackets come away with a 2-0 start to the 2021 season.
The Rock was led by
Jamiyah Johnson who collected her second-straight double-double of the weekend on 14 points and 13 rebounds. Johnson went 5-of-6 from the floor while going 4-of-6 from the foul line to end the night.
Daeja Quick and
Deleah Gibson added 12 points apiece for Slippery Rock with both going 2-of-4 from 3-point range. Quick ended the game 4-of-12 overall with two steals, a block and three rebounds, while Gibson went 4-of-7 from the floor with two steals and four rebounds.
Rounding out The Rock's double-digit scorers were
Anyah Curd with a double-double herself on 11 points and 10 rebounds and
Kennedy Middleton with an almost identical stat line of 10 points and eight rebounds.
Bella Long (3 points, 2 rebounds),
Kelley McKnight (7 points, 3 rebounds) and
Emily Venick (2 points, 1 rebound) made up the final 12 points for The Rock.
The Yellow Jackets started on a strong 12-0 run to start the contest before Slippery Rock was able to sink it's first bucket of the game. West Virginia State would go on to extend its lead to 26 by the end of the first quarter, leading SRU 37-11.
Slippery Rock was able to keep West Virginia State from building its lead any larger through the second period while going on a 10-0 run itself before the halftime break followed by a 9-0 run to start the third quarter.
With less than two minutes left in the third, The Rock battled back to trim the Yellow Jackets to a single-digit lead of 52-60.
The final period remained a battle between Slippery Rock and West Virginia State as SRU cut its deficit to 64-57 with 6:23 left to play. However, the Yellow Jackets went on to form a 6-0 run that would extend their lead back to double digits and seal the eventual 84-71 result.
As a team, The Rock shot 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the floor, 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from long range and 61.5 percent (16-of-25) from the foul line.
Slippery Rock held a notable 40-28 advantage in points in the paint over the Yellow Jackets as well as out rebounding WVSU 50-34.
West Virginia State ended the game shooting 37.8 percent (28-of-74) overall, 26.7 percent (12-45) from 3-point range and 66.7 percent (16-of-24) from the charity stripe. The Yellow Jackets forced SRU into 37 turnovers, having made 24 steals, while committing 19 themselves. Charity Shears accounted for one fourth of WVSU's points with 23.
Slippery Rock travels home for it's home opener against Ursuline College 5:30 p.m. Nov. 17 in Morrow Field House.
