SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The No. 23 Slippery Rock University women's soccer team recorded its fourth consecutive victory in a 3-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division win over Gannon University Wednesday.
With the win SRU improves to 8-1-1 overall and 7-1 in the PSAC West while Gannon falls to 4-2-2 on the year and 4-2-2 in the conference.
The Rock's offensive charge was led by
Megan Sikora, who tallied her first two goals of the season, as well as
Sydney Patrick, who put SRU on in the scorebook first with her third goal of the season.
Jordyn Minda,
Katy Ericson and
Rachel Edge all dished out assists as well.
Emma Yoder made four saves to record her PSAC-best fifth shutout of the season. Wednesday's start was the 36th of Yoder's career, tying her with Lauren McManus (2006-09) for third most starts by a goalkeeper in program history.
Edge's assist is her team-leading sixth of the season, which ranks first in the PSAC. Additionally, Edge also increased her PSAC-total to 20.
The Slippery Rock offensive attack struck first with Minda finding Patrick, who beat goalkeeper Kennedy Solymosi by landing a shot in the upper left corner with 24 minutes remaining in the first half of play.
The Rock defense took over for the remainder of the first half, only allowing two shots on goal, both of which were stopped by Yoder, to maintain a one-goal advantage heading into halftime.
Coming out of the break, Slippery Rock and Gannon played 39 minutes into the second half before Sikora cleaned up an Ericson shot that ricocheted off of the post for The Rock's second goal of the match.
Slippery Rock was not finished yet as just four minutes later Edge found the foot of Sikora, who yet again rocketed a ball to the top shelf out of the reach of Solymosi to close out the 3-0 victory.
SRU's impeccable defense, which leads the PSAC in opponent scoring average at 0.60, is yet to allow a goal in the second half of a game this year.
The quintet of Edge, Sikora,
Kayla Swope,
Georgia Nagucki,
Julia Mascaro all registered two shots. Edge continued to climb The Rock's record book Wednesday as her assist moved her into a tie with Shelby Ward (2009-12) for seventh in program history for points in a career at 67.
The Rock held the advantage in shots on goal (8-4) while Gannon led in total shots (13-12) and corners (8-2).
Slippery Rock begins a two-game road swing when it travels to Clarion University for a PSAC West night match 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
