Â
The Vulcans jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first set on the way to their 25-13 victory in the opener.
Â
The Rock responded from a rough first set with a solid showing in the second set as the game was anyone's contest. SRU took six of the first eight points in the set before Cal U battled back to tie the contest at 10-10. The Vulcans went on to rattle off a 10-3 run to take a seemingly save 20-13 advantage. Undeterred, Slippery Rock fought back with an impressive 9-1 spurt of its own to pull ahead, 22-21, and force a Vulcan timeout.
Â
However, California was able to re-group out of the timeout as it proceeded to record three of the set's final four points to complete the comeback with a 25-22 win. SRU held an 8-7 lead early in the third set, but Cal U put a cap on the match with a decisive 15-4 run which put the Vulcans ahead 22-11 en route to the eventual 25-13 match-deciding victory.
Â
As a team, California held advantages over The Rock in attack percentage (.243- -.009), kills (35-27), aces (6-4) and total blocks (8-1). Sarah Moehring had eight kills and Alayja Floyd compiled five blocks for the Vulcans.
