SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University football team signed 35 student-athletes, including five mid-year transfers and 30 high school seniors, Wednesday during the annual National Signing Day.

The Rock signed players from nine different states, headlined by a total of 22 signees from Pennsylvania. SRU also picked up multiple signees from Florida, Georgia, Maryland and New Jersey and one each from California, Arizona, Ohio and Virginia.

"With the success we had on the field this year, we were really able to open up our recruiting and hit a much larger area," said head coach Shawn Lutz. "To have guys from nine different states and to sign 30 high school kids speaks to the remarkable job our coaching staff did this year. We played late in the season and didn't have as much time to get out and recruit because we were still playing in mid-December. This class is incredibly talented on the field, but I am even more proud of the fact that this is the best academic recruiting class we may have ever had here. The average GPA of the whole class is well above 3.0."

Slippery Rock signed five mid-year transfers including three Division I products in quarterback Noah Grover from the University of North Dakota, offensive tackle Jacob Brunson from the University of Dayton and running back Evyn Holtz from Portland State. The Rock also picked up Division II transfers in running back Timothy Smith from Fairmont State and defensive back Kiyon Santos, who played for LIU Post in 2018 during its final year in Division II.

Grover is expected to be the starting QB during spring camp, as Andrew Koester will sit out the spring to preserve his final semester of eligibility in the fall. Brunson is expected to move into the starting left tackle role that was vacated by departing senior All-American Chris Larsen and Holtz is expected to get the first team reps at running back this spring with the departure of senior Charles Snorweah.

"We filled all the holes we needed offensively," said Lutz. "Noah is a guy that can really sling it and he is a good leader. We expect him and Andrew to compete for the job in the fall and we also signed two very impressive high school quarterbacks that we targeted and recruited hard in Brayden Long and Zaire Hart-Hawkins. We expect Jacob Brunson to be one of our biggest pickups this season on the offensive line. He brings Division I starting experience with him and he has a lot of talent and athleticism up front. We also love the way Evyn Holtz runs the football. We wanted to get him last year and were lucky to get him this year. We added some really deep skill and speed at the running back position, so our backfield should be really impressive next fall."

Santos is likely to assume a starting position in the defensive secondary during spring practices with the departure of two senior cornerbacks.

"Kiyon is a guy that started against us and played man coverage on Henry Litwin in the NCAA playoffs two years ago, so we know what he brings to the table," said Lutz. "We also feel like we did a great job in recruiting impact freshmen to join the secondary. Defensively, we added some real playmakers up front and also picked up a couple of really athletic linebackers that could see the field right away as freshmen next year."

The one area of need that wasn't filled Wednesday was at the kicking position. With the departure of the all-time scoring leader in program history, Jake Chapla, The Rock will still be looking for a kicker/punter to come in to compete for the job.

"That's really the only piece we still want to focus on going after," said Lutz. "We don't want to go into the fall with only one kicker on the roster, so we are going to keep recruiting in that phase and try to add at least one more leg."

Slippery Rock is fresh off a 13-1 season that included a trip to the National Semifinals, PSAC and NCAA Super Region Championships and National Player and Coach of the Year awards. The Rock finished the year ranked sixth in the final NCAA Division II national rankings. SRU will begin spring practices next month and will host the annual Green vs. White Spring Game April 24 at 6 p.m.
