Gannon rallies by Rock for 9-8 win

Gannon erased a 7-1 halftime deficit and outscored Slippery Rock 8-1 in the second half to storm back for a 9-8 win Wednesday.

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon University women's lacrosse team reeled off seven unanswered goals and outscored Slippery Rock University 8-1 in the second half to storm back for a 9-8 win Wednesday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game from McConnell Family Stadium.

The Rock (6-9, 4-7 PSAC) scored seven straight goals in the first half to jump out to a 7-1 lead at halftime and put up advantages in nearly every statistical category in the game, but went cold in the second half and struggled to find the net. Gannon (3-12, 1-10 PSAC) took advantage of those offensive struggles and scored seven straight goals to take an 8-7 lead with 4:56 to play.

Slippery Rock stopped the bleeding with its only goal of the second half when Hayley Pimentel took a pass from Kelly Muenster and tied the game at 8-8 with 2:25 to play, but Gannon retook the lead with 1:03 to play. The Rock won the final draw control and got one last shot on goal with 37 seconds to play, but Golden Knight goalie Erin Renwick made her 19th save of the day to preserve the win.

Slippery Rock finished with advantages of 34-21 in total shots, 27-14 in shots on goal, 31-23 in ground balls, 10-9 in draw controls and 17-9 in caused turnovers. Renwick nearly single-handedly kept her team in the game, recording 11 saves in the second half to finish with 19 saves.

Katie Dlugosz paced The Rock offense with two goals. Francesca Lindelow added one goal and one assist and Muenster handed out two assists to cap the multiple point scorers.

Emily Benham, Sami Gentzler, Sam Barnhart and Pimentel each scored one goal to account for the rest of the SRU points.

Slippery Rock's leading scorer, ShyAnne Toomer, had an academic commitment on campus that she could not miss and was unable to travel to the game.

Rachel Shaw led the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Haley Barrett recorded five saves in goal.

Gannon got five goals from Erin Rotondo and three assists from Haylee Tatar to go along with the 19-save effort from Renwick in goal.

Wednesday's game marked the second in the last two days for SRU after also playing Tuesday against Lake Erie. It also marked the second of three in a span of five days this week, as The Rock will close the season Saturday at home against Shippensburg at 1 p.m.
