Rock closes season with 10-7 win over Ship

Slippery Rock sent seniors Danie Porath and Kelly Muenster out on a positive note with a 10-7 wn over Shippensburg in the season finale Saturday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team closed its 2019 season with a 10-7 victory over Shippensburg University Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
The victory gives The Rock final records of 7-9 overall and 5-7 in PSAC games this spring, while Shippensburg closes its year with records of 5-11 overall and 3-9 in PSAC games.
 
Slippery Rock celebrated seniors Danie Porath and Kelly Muenster in a pregame ceremony before they played in their final collegiate game. They both contributed to the outcome as Porath recorded three caused turnovers and six ground balls and Muenster handed out one assist and grabbed three ground balls. Porath's three caused turnovers give her a career total of 92, which ranks tied for the second most in SRU history. She also finished with 119 career ground balls, the 10th most in program history.
 
Saturday's game featured four distinct scoring runs of at least three straight goals from each team. Shippensburg jumped out of the gates with three goals in the first 4:03 to lead 3-0 before Slippery Rock closed the half on a 3-0 run to send it to halftime tied at 3-3.
 
The Rock added two more goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to take a 5-3 lead with 20:19 to play. Shippensburg ended a 40-minute scoring drought with 15:57 to play to spark a 4-0 run that included two man-up goals and gave the Raiders a 7-5 lead with 8:50 to play.
 
The Rock defense pitched a shutout from there and the offense stormed back with five goals in the final nine minutes. ShyAnne Toomer started the push with 8:50 to play and Francesca Lindelow tied the game at 7-7 with 4:52 to play. Tori Penders tallied the game-winner off an assist from Molly Buettner with 4:26 to play before Buettner and Katie Dlugosz scored insurance tallies to close out the win.
 
Slippery Rock finished with advantages of 28-18 in total shots, 35-29 in ground balls and 23-15 in caused turnovers. Shippensburg posted a 12-7 edge in draw controls, which included a 6-1 advantage in the first half.
 
Lindelow netted a hat trick to pace The Rock attack. Toomer, Buettner and Dlugosz all scored one goal and handed out one assist to cap the multiple point scorers. Penders, Sami Gentzler, Jordan Grey and Kelsey Thoensen all scored one goal and Muenster handed out one assist to cap the scorers.
 
Savannah Renner led the defense with an impressive performance that included seven caused turnovers and six ground balls. Rached Shaw added four caused turnovers and Porath chipped in three. Haley Barrett earned the win in goal after allowing six goals and recording seven saves.
 
Shippensburg got two goals from Alana Cardaci and one goal and one assist from Madi Newman. Shaely Gamble made 10 saves in goal.
 
Slippery Rock will now turn its focus to the offseason as Saturday's game marked the conclusion of the 2019 season.
