Rock falls in three sets to IUP

The Slippery Rock volleyball lost in three sets at home Friday to Indiana (Pa.), 25-21, 25-20, 26-24).

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match to Indiana University (Pa.), 3-0, Friday night at Morrow Field House.

While the Crimson Hawks (6-15, 5-7 PSAC) won in three sets (25-21, 25-20, 26-24) against Slippery Rock (7-17, 2-10 PSAC), all three sets were back-and-forth contests that were anyone's to win.

SRU trailed IUP 22-14 in the opening set before going on an impressive 7-2 run to pull to within three points of the Crimson Hawks, but Indiana was able to end the comeback threat with a Jasmine Raudys kill for the 25-21 victory.

The second set was close for the majority of the contest as The Rock and Crimson Hawks played to a 19-19 tie before IUP took control of the set via a 6-1 spurt to earn a 25-20 win.

Indiana once again took a seemingly safe lead in the third set by scoring nine of the opening 12 points only for The Rock to slowly chip away at the deficit and eventually pull even at 21-21. SRU went on to take a 24-23 lead thanks to a run that included kills by Shannon Ream and Abigail Koeller.

However, SRU was unable to find the set-winning point as Indiana rallied to post three straight points en route to the match-clinching 26-24 win.

Slippery Rock registered its fifth highest team attack percentage of the season (.216) in the defeat in addition to holding advantages over the Crimson Hawks in aces (7-4) and total blocks (7-4).

Koeller and Erinn Kahoe ended the night tied for the team-lead in kills with eight apiece. Kahoe reached her second-highest kill total of the year on an impressive .538 attack percentage. Koeller also added an ace and one block while Kahoe produced a match-best four rejections (one solo / three assisted).

Abigail Nigon added five kills and three blocks (one solo / two assisted) while Kaley Fucci (four kills), Sophie Varndell (three kills) and Ream (two kills) rounded out The Rock's leading attackers. Fucci also gave SRU one ace and nine digs.

Zoe Rivet served two aces to increase her season total to 40, which ranks third among all PSAC athletes. Fellow setter Logan Whitaker did a little bit of everything Friday as she tallied four kills, 15 assists and three blocks.

The duo of Gabby Huck and Stephanie Jacobsen combined to record 23 digs with Jacobsen also serving two aces.

Indiana was led in the win by the duo of Nicole Peterson and Lizzie Virgin. Peterson recorded 18 kills on a .455 attack percentage while Virgin added 16 kills and two blocks.

Slippery Rock will close out the weekend 1 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Pitt-Johnstown at Morrow Field House.
