Rock drops 3-2 decision at Bloomsburg

The Slippery Rock volleyball team lost in five sets at Bloomsburg Saturday afternoon 23-25, 12-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-12.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost a five-set thriller at Bloomsburg University Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest.
 
Slippery Rock appeared poised to earn its third win in the last four matches after it picked up a close 25-23 win in the opening set followed by a dominant 25-12 victory in the second set.
 
However, the Huskies battled back to even the match at two sets apiece with 25-20 and 26-24 victories in the third and fourth to force a fifth and deciding set that Bloomsburg ultimately won 15-12.
 
SRU exits the weekend with an overall record of 7-8 and a PSAC mark of 2-2 while the Huskies improve to 6-11 overall and 1-4 in league matches. Slippery Rock is now 2-2 in five-set matches this season.
 
Abigail Koeller continued her strong start to her freshman season by pacing The Rock against the Huskies with 16 kills, 31 digs and one block. Koeller's 31 digs were the most by a Rock freshman in a single-match dating back to the 2002 season. She also earned her 16 kills on an impressive .318 attack percentage.
 
Kaley Fucci and Gabby Huck also registered double-digit kill totals. Fucci contributed 14 kills to go with 13 digs, one block and one ace while Huck tallied 11 kills, 16 digs and one block.
 
Tiara Teague added four kills and a pair of blocks as well. Playing in her first match of the 2019 season, Erinn Kahoe chipped in four kills and one block.
 
Zoe Rivet setup The Rock's offense on Saturday with a season-high 48 assists. Additionally, Rivet served two aces and made 17 digs. Rivet now has 10 aces over The Rock's last four matches. Danielle Bywalski matched Rivet with two aces as well against Bloomsburg.
 
The Rock recorded a .180 attack percentage over the opening two sets, but produced an attack percentage of just .041 in the final three sets.
 
For the match, Slippery Rock held a .093 - .073 edge over the Huskies in attack percentage and a 50-43 advantage in kills while Bloomsburg ended the day leading The Rock in aces (11-6) and blocks (10-3).
 
Slippery Rock will step out of PSAC competition for a road match 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at Tiffin University.
