Rock loses in three sets at Gannon

The Slippery Rock volleyball team lost a PSAC Northwest Division match on the road at Gannon Friday in three sets (25-15, 25-13, 25-16).

ERIE, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Northwest Division match on the road at Gannon University Friday in three sets.

The Golden Knights (17-5, 9-1 PSAC) earned their 11th three-set victory of the year by defeating The Rock (7-15, 2-8 PSAC) 25-15, 25-13, 25-16.

Slippery Rock was led on the night by the trio of Abigail Koeller, Kaley Fucci and Erinn Kahoe.

Koeller produced 10 kills and nine digs while Fucci went for seven kills, 12 digs and two blocks with Kahoe coming away with a six-kill, one-ace, one-block showing. Kahoe also posted a team-best .308 attack percentage.

Setter Zoe Rivet guided the attack with 24 assists to go with six digs, one block and one kill as well. Gabby Huck, who served as The Rock's libero for a second straight match, made a team-best 14 digs.

Abigail Nigon and Sophie Varndell rounded out SRU's top performers. Both freshmen recorded one block while Varndell also tallied a kill.

Gannon ran out to a 7-2 run to open the match, forcing an early Rock timeout, but the break did little to stop the Golden Knights' momentum as GU went on to take the opener 25-15 thanks in no small part to a stellar .432 team attack percentage. Fucci totaled four kills and one block for SRU in the first set.

The Rock got off to a much better start in the second set as they found themselves leading 6-3 through the first nine points before Gannon rattled off a decisive 11-1 run that SRU could never recover from on the way to a 25-13 Golden Knight win.

Slippery Rock played its best set of the night in the third, but after trading points with the Golden Knight's through the game's early stages SRU ultimately succumbed to a stout Gannon attack as GU closed out the sweep with a 25-16 victory.

Ally Smith led Gannon in the win with 15 kills, eight digs, one block and a .419 attack percentage. For the match, Gannon held advantages over The Rock in kills (50-26), attack percentage (.381-.107), aces (5-1) digs (54-49) and total blocks (4-3).

Slippery Rock will look to close out the weekend with a victory at Edinboro University 3 p.m. Saturday.
