Rock pulls away late to defeat Pitt-Johnstown, 87-70

The Slippery Rock men’s basketball team had four players finish in double-figures en route to an 87-70 victory against PSAC West foe, Pitt-Johnstown, Wednesday night at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team had four players finish in double-figures en route to an 87-70 victory over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division opponent, the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, Wednesday night at Morrow Field House.  
 
Slippery Rock stretches its win streak to 11 games and improves to 13-5 overall and 10-1 in PSAC West games while Pitt-Johnstown drops to 11-7 overall and 6-5 in league contests.
 
UPJ went on a run late in the first half cutting the deficit to one point before the break at 37-36. The Mountain Cats even took the lead with 17:29 minutes remaining in the second half, but SRU regained the lead and never looked back holding on for the win.
 
As a team, SRU shot an outstanding 46.3 percent (31-for-67). The Rock also shot 36.4 percent from three-point range going 8-for-22 from behind the line. SRU was also +18 in rebounds finishing with 48 while UPJ had 30.
 
Junior guard Jared Armstrong paced SRU's offensive attack tallying 22 points. Armstrong was 6-for-13 from the field, 3-for-5 from three-point range and was 7-for-9 at the free throw line. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native also added four rebounds and three assists.
 
Redshirt Junior Micah Till recorded a double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Till was also 8-for-13 from the free throw line and added two assists offensively, while posting three blocks and two steals on defense.
 
Senior Guard Nolen Gerald added 16 points shooting 7-for-13 in field goals and was 2-for-2 from deep. He also managed two assists and added two blocks and a steal defensively.
 
Senior Guard John Warren II rounded out The Rock's top scorers recording 14 points after shooting 5-for-11 from the floor and 2-for-6 from downtown.
 
The Mountain Cats had a solid day offensively as well shooting 42.6 percent (26-for-61) from the floor and were an impressive 16-for-20 at the charity stripe.
 
UPJ was led by freshman forward John Paul Kromka who led all scorers on the day with 27 points shooting 10-for-16 from the floor. He was also 7-for-9 at the free throw line.
 
Slippery Rock will look to improve its win streak to 12 games when it travels to Edinboro University Saturday. Opening tip is set for 3 p.m.
