Rock downs Edinboro, 88-71, for 12th straight win

Micah Till and John Warren II each scored 25 points to lead the Slippery Rock men’s basketball team to its 12th consecutive win in an 88-71 victory at Edinboro.

EDINBORO, Pa. - Micah Till and John Warren II scored 25 points apiece to lead the Slippery Rock University men's basketball team to its 12th consecutive win in an 88-71 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division victory Saturday at Edinboro University.
 
With the win Slippery Rock improves its record to 14-5 overall and remains in first place in the PSAC West standings with an 11-1 league record. Edinboro falls to 5-12 overall and 2-10 in conference competition with the loss.
 
Slippery Rock's 12-game winning streak is tied for the third longest streak in program history. The school record for consecutive victories is 16, set by the 1989-90 Rock squad. SRU also won 13 straight games during the 1945-46 campaign.
 
On a national stage this season, Slippery Rock's 12-game winning streak is the seventh longest active streak in the nation behind only Northwest Missouri (19), Bellarmine (18), Colorado Mines (14), Queens (14), Virginia State (13) and Port Loma (13).
 
Slippery Rock led for 38:19 of a possible 40 minutes Saturday. The Fighting Scots' only lead Saturday came with 17:40 to play in the first half and lasted only 30 seconds.
 
SRU held a comfortable lead between eight and 12 points for much of the contest. Slippery Rock stretched its lead out to 16 points at 46-30 three minutes into the second half before Edinboro briefly threatened The Rock's advantage with a 31-19 over the following nine minutes to make it a 65-61 game with eight minutes to play in regulation.
 
However, Slippery Rock proceeded to rebound from the Fighting Scots' onslaught by scoring 20 of the game's next 24 points to push its lead out 20 at 85-65 with 2:40 showing on the clock on the way to the decisive victory.
 
Warren II and Till shined when SRU needed the duo most as they scored 18 of The Rock's 20 points over the run with Nolen Gerald chipping in a pair of free throws as well. Till and Warren II shot a combined 7-for-8 from the field over the stretch.
 
Till reached 25 points, his 13th game of the year with at least 20 points of the season, by going 9-for-12 from the field overall and 7-for-9 at the free throw line. In addition to his scoring, Till also provided The Rock with seven rebounds, three assists, one block and two steals over 25 minutes.
 
Warren II went 10-for-20 from the field and a stellar 5-for-11 from 3-point territory while adding five rebounds and one steal. He is averaging 18.3 points per game over The Rock's last six contests.

Jared Armstrong also reached double figures with 12 points to go along with five rebounds. Gerald and Lasley scored seven points each with Lasley also pulling in a team-best 10 rebounds. Amante Britt (six points, four assists, four rebounds) and Will Bounds (four rebounds, two points) rounded out The Rock's top performers.
 
As a team, Slippery Rock shot 45.2 percent (33-for-73) from the field overall and 77.8 percent (14-for-18) at the free throw line while holding  a 46-44 advantages over Edinboro in rebounding and committing a season-low seven turnovers. SRU was 19-for-34 (55.9 percent) from the field in the second half.
 
Edinboro finished the game shooting 37 percent (27-for-73) overall and 64.3 percent (9-for-14) from the charity stripe. Trey Staunch led the Fighting Scots in the losing effort with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Slippery Rock will look to continue its winning streak with a victory 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30 at Gannon University.
